Harper

The next threeweeks fly by as I adjust to classes and life in the Underworld. Following Sadie’s advice, I make sure I’m in the middle of the pack. I’m careful not to stand out or correct anyone and also make sure I do my homework so I’m not falling behind.

Sadie’s theory that the ranking students would ease off of me quickly was correct. Most of them don’t even bother to look my way. The little group of misfits I met in mymagic for non-demonsclass accepted me and I didn’t have to spend any weekends alone.

Aside from missing my friends and my old life, things at Brimstone aren’t so bad.

And there’s the fact that I know I have a life waiting for me if I can just get out of here.

The tables in the cafeteria are packed tonight and I look around for Sadie so we can eat together. Someone waves and I turn to see Corbin and Damon. Neither of them have talked to me aside from standard greetings in class since the party.

Figuring they’re not waving to me, I turn away and look for Sadie again.

“Harper,” someone calls.

I turn to see Corbin and Damon waving even harder. “Come over here.”

Wrinkling my nose I consider ignoring them. But things have been going so well and I’m not sure I want to draw attention to myself by starting shit with them.

With a sigh, I walk over to their table. “What’s up?”

“Have a seat,” one of them says.

I’m honestly not sure which is which yet. “I’m sort of looking for my friend.”

“Sadie left. Something about a library date with Lance,” he says.

I tense, recognizing the name. She’d been telling me about Lance with a dreamy expression on her face for the last two weeks. If she finally got some alone time with him, I know she’d take it. And I’m happy for her.

“Sit please,” he says, patting the empty chair next to him.

I narrow my eyes. “Corbin?”

“Yes,” he says, looking impressed. “Most people can’t tell us apart.”

“You asked nicely,” I say.

He laughs.

“Wow, burn,” Damon says. “But I deserve that. Just sit, Harper. Have some dinner. We won’t bite.”

“Fine.” I take the seat and quickly serve myself some food. I am hungry and I don’t want to make dinner take longer than necessary.

“Congrats on getting on the board,” Corbin says.

I set the roll I was about to eat back on my plate. “What board?”

“You’re number twelve,” he says. “Bumped Remember from her spot. She’s below you.”

Pride mixes with fear in my gut. I want to move up on that chart and win the pass out of here, but not yet. My plan is to go slow. This is too fast. There’s still two full months left before the solstice.

“I’ve never seen a reform kid get on the wall so quickly,” Damon says. “You must be doing something right.”

“I guess,” I say, staring at my food. Suddenly, I’m not so hungry anymore. This is definitely going to draw attention to me sooner than I wanted.

“Maybe we can hang out and celebrate,” Damon says.
