“Good night, Sadie,” I call as I walk toward my room.
After a quick shower and change of clothes, I crawl in between the sheets. My mind races as I think about the party invitation and the fact that my name is on the wall. How will that change things? And what did I do that got me there?
Over the last few weeks, I’ve been working on using my magic more and more but I’ve only been successful using other powers while touching someone. The students in my non-demons class have let me test my magic while channeling theirs. But I didn’t think anything I’d done had been all that spectacular.
Now that I’m on the wall, I’ve got two choices. I can either keep fighting for my place on there, or I can try to slow down so I drop off. Slowing down is risky because I don’t want to be the worst student. That draws far too much attention. But moving up isn’t safe, either.
Though, it might be easier to hang on to it if I can get a little higher. As we near the solstice, I know I have to start making my move if I want that pass.
I close my eyes and take a deep breath. I’m not sure why, but I mentally reach out for any signs of magic. For anything that I might be able to grab a hold of and channel into something more.
To my surprise, I feel something. It’s familiar but weak. Like the air around me is shifting.Adrian?
Harper?
I grip my sheets tight with my hand.
Who are you channeling?Adrian sounds surprised that I’m in his head and I have to admit, I’m surprised myself.
You, I think. I’m not sure how I’m doing this without touching him, but I feel like I’ve caught a thread of his magic. It’s as if I’m pulling it toward me and holding on to it.
I’m going to have to start being more careful around you now.
I grin.Why, thinking something you don’t want me to know?
Goodnight, Harper.
I feel the thread snap and as suddenly as the magic came, it’s gone. He’s shut me out.Well, that’s new. I turn on my side and settle into my pillow. With a smile on my face I imagine Adrian in his room on his bed.
And in my mind, he’s naked.
