The handle doesn’t turn.

I lock it then unlock it and try again. Nothing.

I jiggle the handle. It’s still stuck.

I try it again.

Nothing.

Groaning, I toss my head back. “Seriously?”

Can this day get any worse?

I lean my head against the door and whimper. I just want to go to dinner. If I don’t go, Em will think she got the best of me. Plus, I’m hungry.

My stomach growls as if to prove my point. Beyond the door, I hear movement. “Sadie? Is that you? Hey, Sadie, can you open the door from out there?”

The door opens quickly and I fall face first on the ground. “Warning would have been nice.”

I look up from my spot on the floor to see Adrian looking down at me. He’s dressed this time in his usual black tee shirt and jeans. He shakes his head. “Locked yourselfinyour room. That has to be a first.”

I scramble to my feet. “It’s been a long day, okay?”

When I turn back to my door, I notice some symbols painted around the doorknob. “What’s this?”

Adrian leans closer, then he uses his shirt to wipe the markings away. “You pissed someone off big time.”

“What is it?” I ask again.

“It was a summoning hex,” he says. “Trying to lure an especially nasty creature to your room. Probably combined with a locking spell to keep you in.”

“What the fuck?” I look back at the door but the markings are all gone. “What kind of creature? And who would do that?”

“Do you need a list of the people who don’t like you?” he asks sarcastically.

“Okay, that was a dumb question,” I agree. I’m pretty sure I know who the culprit is. “What about the creature? What kind of creature are we talking about?”

“I’m not sure you want to know,” he says.

“I want to know!” My voice comes out shrill.

“One of the Gorgons,” he says.

“Gorgon? Like Medusa?” I ask.

“Probably one of her minions, she’s pretty busy,” he says.

“Someone was trying to turn me to stone?” I ask.

“It happens,” he says with a shrug. “It’s been a few years. I guess we’re due again. You really should check your door before you go into your room. That’s a beginner mistake.”

“I am a beginner,” I say.

“Not anymore,” he says. “I warned you, getting on that list for the pass puts a target on your back. You’re in the top ten, you’re fair game.”
