Magic seems to fill the whole room, as if I’m surrounded by options. It’s nearly impossible to decide what to grab hold of. But when I call to my magic, it rises to the surface stronger than ever, guiding me.

On instinct, I pull in a force I don’t recognize. Magic that feels strong and dangerous. It calls to me, begging to connect.

I stretch out my arms, spreading my fingers as I let the unfamiliar magic flow through me.

Then I release it.

A blinding white light explodes from me, sending me flying backward into the wall. Screams surround me and I can feel the fear filling the room.

I’m surrounded by an empty white void of light as I scramble to my feet. “Carlos?”

A hand closes in around my arm and drags me up. “How did you do that?” Adrian asks.

I turn toward the sound of his voice but I can’t see him yet. It’s still too bright. “I don’t know.”

The light starts to fade and Adrian lets go of my arm. Carlos is back in his human form, naked on the ground.

“Go get the nurse,” Adrian calls.

Nobody moves. All my classmates are staring at me as if I have a second head growing out of my body.

“Someone, go!” Adrian yells.

Ginny squeals and jumps from her seat and darts out the door. I look back at Carlos. He’s not moving. I don’t think he’s even breathing.

Adrian kneels down next to him and sets his fingers against his neck then looks up at me and shakes his head.

I cover my mouth as silent tears run down my cheeks. That’s not possible. I don’t even know what I did. “He can’t be…”

“Class dismissed,” Adrian says.

Sadie walks over to me and touches my arm. “Harper? We should go back to our room. I’m sure the nurse will help him.”

I can’t even look at her.

“No, Harper you stay here,” Adrian says. “We have to talk.”

My classmates file out of the room while the school’s nurse walks in. She’s in blue and pink polka dotted scrubs that look just like something I would have seen in my old life. The normal should be reassuring, but in this case, it’s not.

She kneels down next to Carlos and presses her fingers to his neck. “How long has he been down?”

“Couple of minutes,” Adrian says. “I’m pretty sure it was instant.”

The nurse lowers her fingers and looks up at Adrian, concern wrinkling her forehead.

“Heaven’s light,” he says.

Her eyes widen and she looks over at me. “From you?”

I open my mouth, then close it. I don’t even know what happened and it’s too much to process.

“She didn’t know,” Adrian says. He looks over at me. “None of us knew.”

The nurse stands and then with a flick of her wrist, Carlos is floating. “I’ll report it to the headmaster.”

I feel helpless as I watch Carlos float out of the room, the nurse following behind his lifeless body. Tears blur my vision and my chest feels tight. I have no idea what just happened. Carlos is my friend. I’d never hurt a friend.

“Did you know?” Adrian asks. He looks more serious than I’ve ever seen him.
