“Know what?” I manage. “I don’t even know what just happened.”

“You cast something calledheaven’s light,” he says. “It’s one of the most powerful weapons in the supernatural world. And it can only be cast by a full-blooded angel. You’re not a half angel. Did you know?”

I shake my head, struggling to come to terms with his words. “No, I never met my dad. My mom never talked about him. I don’t even know who he was.”

“This changes things,” Adrian says. He walks from the room without a word.

Panic grips me, making my chest hurt. I don’t know what to do but my only source of information just walked out of the room. I run after him, practically jogging to catch up.

He doesn’t look back at me, he just keeps going. Up the stairs, down the hall, past the entry doors.

He stops in front of the wall with the rank postings. I walk over to him and stand next to him. My eyes automatically go to the wall, searching for my name. I start at twenty and work my way back.

When I get to number three, I feel like the wind was knocked out of me. “How is that possible?”

“The magic you used was some of the most powerful of any student here,” he says without looking at me. “You were a threat before. Now you’re a walking target.”

“I didn’t ask for this,” I say.

“But you wanted it, right?” he says.

“I did…I do.” I stare at the wall, feeling numb. “I want to win that pass, but I thought I’d have more time.”

“You’re out of time,” he says. “You have to keep your name up there now and you have to stay alive.”
