Harper

Every day,I check the rankings. I’m still holding on to third despite doing my best for a full week to not draw attention to myself.

Most of my classmates, including Sadie, are keeping their distance. I don’t blame them. And it’s probably better for me that they’re a little afraid of me right now.

I know the retaliation for my high rank will come and I know I have to be ready. In a school where you earn points for killing another student, I’m sure nothing is off limits.

“Sadie?” I knock on her door gently. “Want to go for a walk?”

“Sorry, I have to finish this thing,” she calls.

“Alright,” I say, not wanting to push her. She needs more time. I need more time. Despite my digging in the library, I still don’t know how I used that spell or anything more about what being a full angel means. Things would be a hell of a lot easier if I was a demon. Everything is designed for them.

Deciding fresh air alone was better than sitting in my room feeling sorry for myself, I walk into the hallway. I haven’t seen Adrian since that fateful day and part of me doesn’t want to see the judgmental look on his face. But he’s the only one who seemed to have any information.

Sucking it up, I walk to his door and knock. “Adrian? You there?”

I knock again and wait for a few seconds before I start to feel really, really stupid. He’s not going to help me. He made it clear that I wasn’t going to be his problem for long.

Feeling defeated and abandoned, I turn around just as I hear the door open. I consider walking away but I’ve run out of options.

“Harper?” His voice is comforting and steadies my nerves.

I turn back to him. “Hi.”

“What’s wrong?”

“Everything?” I laugh.

He smiles. “Why don’t you come in.”

I hesitate, then walk past him into his room. It’s set up like mine, with a living room in the middle and two closed doors on either side. Books cover the top of the table in front of the couch and the whole place smells like coffee and campfire. It’s a good combination.

He walks to the tiny kitchen and pours a cup of coffee from a full pot. “Cream and sugar?”

“Yes, please,” I say.

He adds the cream and sugar to the cup then brings it to me. “Have a seat.”

I hold the warm mug in-between my hands as I walk over to the couch. He joins me, sitting almost close enough for our legs to touch. A rush of heat surges through me at the proximity but I push the thought away. That’s not why I’m here. In my old life, I would definitely have jumped on him. But I’m trying this new thing where I don’t make such bad decisions about my love life.

“Let me guess, you want to talk about last week?” He takes a sip of his coffee.

I set the cup down on the table, pushing away a few books to make room. The book on the top of the stack catches my attention and I pick it up. “So this is why I can’t find any books on angels in the library?”

I glance down at the pile. They’re all about angels. Every single one.

“I didn’t want to talk to you about it until I had more information,” he said.

“Okay, so what did you find out?” I ask.

“Many, many things,” he says.

I set the book down with a sigh. “Adrian, cut the bullshit. You and me already have one glaring secret between us. We don’t need more.”

“There are several things I’ve been keeping from you,” he says.
