“Thanks,” I manage.

He doesn’t seem to care that he’s standing in the middle of the classroom shirtless. And honestly, he has nothing to worry about. With his clothes on, I knew he was strong, but I had no idea he was the proud owner of a six pack and perfectly shaped pecs. Wow.

“You’re drooling,” he says.

I close my open mouth. “I am not.” Okay, maybe I was. A little. But I’d never tell him that.

Professor Lee is next to me now. “What happened?”

“I’m not sure,” I say.

She lifts up my jar and sniffs. “You added sulfur to this.”

“No I didn’t,” I say. “I swear, I followed the directions.”

She frowns. “You realize how lucky you are? If you’d used a larger amount, you’d be a crater in the floor.”

“Some people just shouldn’t be using magic,” Em says.

I narrow my eyes at her. Apparently, the waiting period for not trying to kill me has expired.

“Watch your back,” she says.

Professor Lee sets the jar back on my desk. “You might want to double check your work from now on.”

“I’m not the one who screwed it up,” I say. “Em must have added it.”

“Maybe she did,” Professor Lee says. “But if you had tested it prior to trying to use it, you’d have caught that.”

“So tampering with other people’s potions is allowed?” I ask.

“I didn’t see it happen,” she says as she walks away.

My jaw is open as I stare after her. Seriously?

“You’ll need to make a new batch, Ms. Love,’ Professor Lee says.

I shake my head as I grab the jar of explosive potion. On my way back to the storage room, I drop it in the trash can. I should dump it on Em but I know I won’t.

By the time I’m done with making a new batch, the rest of the class is gone. I use a chair to put my potion on the highest shelf, behind a plant. Then I grab my stuff and head to the door.

Corbin is waiting for me in the hall. “Hey, you alright?”

“Yeah, I think so,” I say.

“I tried to wait for you in there but Professor Lee kicked us all out. Said she has a date or something?”

“I feel bad for whoever her date is,” I say.

“No kidding,” he says. “She’ll probably eat him.”

“Wouldn’t surprise me,” I say as I start walking down the hall.

“Sorry about Em,” he says. “She’s a bitch.”

“That’s true. But I suppose most people around here don’t care for me.” I stop walking and turn to look at him. “Which brings me to you. Look, you seem nice, but I don’t get it. Everyone else cares about the ranking and wants me out of the equation. Why risk being around me at all?”

“Cause you’re worth it,” he says.
