Liam

For weeks,I’ve watched Harper. I know why she’s here but I haven’t been able to figure out why my father spared her life. He’s not usually the forgiving type. While he has had people pay off debts for their families in the past, it’s not usually for something like this. He doesn’t go around giving any angel who wants out of their realm a pass. His magic is strong enough to remove their wings without killing them, but he rarely does it.

But the more I watch Harper, the more interested in her I become. And it’s not just because she’s beautiful, though, that is a bonus. It’s because she uses angel magic without the wings. I’ve always heard that wings gave them their power. Yet, here is this woman who, rumor has it, cast a heaven’s light spell, with no visible signs of being an angel.

It doesn’t make sense. But I have a feeling it’s part of why she’s here now and not dead like her human friends.

She fascinates me. The way she stands up for herself while also balancing a kind of quiet contemplation. She doesn’t charge into things head first or without a plan.

And those eyes.

Fuck.

When she stares at me like this even I feel something that’s different than my usual lust. I want to command her but I want her to come to me on her own. When I conquer her, it’s going to be her begging me to take her.

I want it so bad I can nearly taste it. Her honey scent drives me wild and I wonder if she’ll taste as good as she smells.

“We need a topic,” she says, all business.

I wonder if she knows just how much she gets under my skin. “How about the Battle of New Versailles?” I suggest.

“Isn’t that the one where the angels were captured and tortured in mass?” she asks with a frown.

“Yes,” I say. “It’s what got them involved in the war. Figure you might as well study your heritage.”

“Your side was the one doing the torturing,” she says.

“No, the goblins and lesser demons initiated that,” he says. “The higher demons were neutral.”

“So your side ignored the suffering of others?” she says.

“Yes,” I say. “But they did get involved once the angels tipped them off.”

“Right,” she says. “Fine. Whatever you want as long as we can get this over with.”

“What kind of angel are you?” I ask.

“Um, unless it’s stamped on my ass or something, I have no idea,” she says.

“Want me to check?” I offer.

She laughs and the sound sends a rush of joy through me. It’s a beautiful sound and I find I want to hear her laugh more. It’s strange. While she’s been in my class for weeks, I haven’t actually thought about her as a person. Just as a curiosity. But now that we’re alone together like this, I want to get to know her more.

I walk over to the book shelf and find a book about angel classification. I know there isn’t much on the subject in our school library. “Here.”

Harper walks over to me and takes the offered book. For a moment, she looks like she’s going to cry. “Thanks.”

“Maybe you can figure out some of your past.”

She holds the book against her chest. “Can I borrow it for a bit?”

“Sure,” I say.

“What about you?” she asks. “What kind of demon are you?”

“I’m an incubus,” I say.
