“You got this,”Sadie whispers. “You’re better with magic now than you were then.”

I have practiced more but I still don’t feel confident in this situation. At least I know Sadie won’t shift into a wolf and try to eat me.

She lifts her hands and I know she’s going to try to throw something at me. If I can channelhermagic and not mine, it’ll be okay.

A gust of wind rushes past me, pushing me back. It’s not as intense as I know she can do. She’s going easy on me.

Feeling for her magic, I find it quickly. The thread hangs there in the air and I grasp for it with my own magic, binding the two. Lifting my hands, I send my own gust of air and she stumbles backward a little before righting herself.

She moves forward, launching wind at me again with more force this time. I pull more of her magic and send the force back. But this time, I harness some of her other elements and add in a spray of ice.

It surprises me that I’m able to take her magic a step beyond what she’s using. She grins. “Nicely done.”

Her stance changes and I know she’s not going to go as easy on me as she was when she started.

Magic hangs in the air around me and I can feel not just hers, but the other people in my class. I can also feel what I think ismymagic. Whatever it was from inside of me that caused so much damage last time.

Sadie launches another huge gust of wind my way and I have to fight to stay upright. When it subsides, I quickly pull on Macy’s magic. It feels like spring and rushes into me like a warm breeze.

Channeling her powers, I throw the magic at Sadie. Roots grow from the ground and wrap themselves around Sadie’s feet. Calling more of Macy’s magic, I make the roots grow. They wind themselves around Sadie’s legs, twisting around her waist and up to her chest. Sadie’s arms are bound to her side and little leaves sprout from the veins.

Sadie struggles to free herself, but she’s trapped. She looks up at me. “So my magic wasn’t good enough for you?”

Someone claps and I look over to see Macy on her feet. “That was brilliant. I’m stealing that.”

The rest of my class stands and claps and I lower my hands as relief rushes through me. I can feel the shift in the room. The tension that has been a part of every class since Carlos is gone.

“I’m sorry, everyone. You know how sorry I am,” I say.

Macy walks toward me and pulls me into a hug. “We know.”

“That’s nice and all, but can one of you let me out?” Sadie calls.

Adrian walks over to her and touches the vines. They turn black and shrivel as they crumble and die.

I’ve never seen Adrian use magic before. It’s terrifying but I can’t look away. “What was that?” I ask.

“Death,” he says.

I swallow hard. I never did get the details about what kind of demon he was or what his magic was like. And I still don’t know why he was sent to find me.

“Alright, everyone choose a station to start in. You’ve got less than an hour of class time to practice. Don’t waste it,” he says.

I’m still staring at him as he walks away from me. Just being in the same room as him hurts more than I want to admit. I want to stay mad at him. I want to storm away from him or say something clever. I want him to hurt as much as I do.

“Agility?” Sadie asks.

I look over to see her still brushing off the dead veins. “Sure. How exactly does a pixie jump?”

She grins. “We don’t jump. We fly.”

“That I’ve got to see,” I say, following her to the tall box.

I’m impressed by her moves as she graceful lands on top of the box. We practice for a while, and soon, I’m able to channel enough of her magic to float to the top of the box.
