“She’s half human, which means she can learn our ways,” the king says.

“I suggest the academy, my king,” a woman’s voice says.

One of the people seated in the chairs near the king stands. She’s in a long black dress and her flame red hair hangs down to her waist. She’s stunning but she has a look of danger about her. As if she’d eat you alive if you crossed her.

“Let her learn our ways before she begins her sentence,” she says.

The king taps his chin with his forefinger. “That is an interesting proposition.”

“She’s the correct age,” Adrian says. “They were celebrating her birthday when I found her. Twenty-one.”

I turn back to him and narrow my eyes. How much does he know about me?

“It’s settled then,” the king says. “Harper Love, you will attend Brimstone Academy for three terms. If you survive, you will begin your sentence serving me after you graduate.”

I try to speak but all that comes out is a mumbled humming sound. The king grins at me as if he knows what I’m saying. I very much doubt it. Because right now I’m screaming a series of profanities at him that would make a sailor blush.

“Adrian, she’s your charge.” The king turns and walks away.

“Wait, what?” Adrian asks. “I already did what you asked. My debt is repaid.”

“That’s true,” the king says without turning around. “Consider it a favor to me, then. Keep her alive and I’ll owe you.”

Adrian’s eyes widen and even though I can’t explain it, I know the power behind those words. This man can make you do things you don’t want to do. What else could he do?

“Come on, Harper,” Adrian says. “Let’s get you to your new home.”
