“The thing is, apparently there used to always be an angel on the high council for the ruling courts,” he says.

“Wow.” I think about the prince and I shudder. If he has his way, I’ll be working for him in some capacity.

“Turns out, angel magic can amplify demon magic to insane levels,” he says. “And that it can make demons more powerful.”

“Oh?” I ask. “Where did you learn all of this?”

He shrugs. “I’ve been doing some research about angels.”

I frown. “Has everyone been researching about me?”

“Who else is?” he asks.

“Nobody,” I say, not wanting to explain the whole Adrian thing. “It just feels like everyone else knows more about me than I know about myself.”

“That’s just it,” he says. “You told me you were a half angel when we met. But then I heard the rumor that you usedheaven’s light. Which you shouldn’t have been able to do.”

“Right,” I say. “So?”

“Harper, please don’t use it again. I think you’re in danger. I think if anyone finds out you’re a full angel that things could get very bad for you.”

“What am I supposed to do?” I ask, frustration bubbling inside. “I’m stuck here. All I want is to get out of here.”

“I know,” he says. “And you’re on the right track but you have to get past Liam.”

“I’m open to ideas if you have them,” I say.

“I sort of have something on him,” he says.

I tense. “What do you mean?”

He blows out a breath. “We were friends when we were kids. I might be the only person who knows this.”

“What could you possibly know that would make Liam care about anything?” I ask.

“He’s adopted,” he says. “He’s not a blood heir but in order to rule the Kingdom of Keys, you have to have an heir. A blood heir. Prince Alastor isn’t his biological father. He was the child of a servant in the Prince’s household. She died during childbirth.”

“So he’s not a higher demon?” I ask.

“He is, that part is true, but he’s not full demon,” he says.

“What is he?” I ask.

“He’s part shifter,” he says. “It makes him very unstable.”

“Does he know?” I ask carefully, surprised that I’m feeling sorry for Liam.

“He does, but nobody else knows. If word got out, Alastor Drake loses his throne and Liam loses his status,” he says.

I suck in a breath. “You want me to blackmail him to fail his final?”

“I wouldn’t do this if I didn’t believe you were in danger,” he says. “If other demons figure out what you are, they can use your power to their advantage.”

“Like Alastor Drake?” I ask. “The prince who wants to keep me in his service for the rest of my life.”

“Maybe,” Corbin says. “Maybe that’s why he wants you. Maybe he sent you here to test you. I don’t know. All I know is that the pass is absolute. It supersedes all other punishments. It’s your only chance and you have to take it.”
