“Adrian,I know you’re in there. Open the door.” I pound on his door again.

When it swings open, he doesn’t look surprised to see me. I push my way past him without waiting for an invitation.

“Did you know about the whole angels making demons more powerful thing?” I demand.

“Hello to you too,” he says calmly. He closes the door and walks into the living room.

I stand there with my arms crossed over my chest. “Why are you keeping things from me? You took all the books and you’ve been studying angels. All I got was a classification book from Liam that’s written in a language I can’t translate.”

“You got a book from Liam? Where is it?” he asks.

“You’re missing the point,” I say. “What the hell is going on here? Why does Alastor Drake give a damn about me? I need answers, Adrian. You owe me that much, at least.”

He’s silent for a minute and I wonder if I scared him. I’ve never gone off on him like this and I probably sound like an insane person. But this is my life we’re talking about.

“Adrian,” I say his name softly. “I need help. I need to understand this. Please.”

He runs a hand through his long, dark hair then walks over to his couch where he takes a seat.

I follow and sit next to him, careful to leave space between us.

He looks at me, those violet eyes locked on mine and I can sense a tangle of emotions in that gaze. He’s conflicted over something but I can’t get a full read on him.

“You’re right, I suspect that Alastor wants something with you,” he says. “But I didn’t know you were a full angel and that complicates things.”

“How?” I ask.

“Because, like you said, it can strengthen the power of higher demons,” he says. “But it hasn’t been done in years. The bond required isn’t usually risked.”

“What bond?” I cover my face with my hands for a second, then drop them to my lap. “Adrian, explain it to me as if I grew up in the human realm.”

He nods. “In order to use the power from an angel, the demon and angel have to meld their magic together to form a bond. Essentially, the two people are one. You share the magic between both of you.”

“That doesn’t sound too bad,” I say, hoping my words don’t give away how nervous this is making me.

“When this was done in the past, the angels were usually locked away,” he says. “Kept as prisoners, slaves.”

I suck in a breath. That’s what he wants from me. But why wait? Why send me here first? “You think that’s what he wants?”

“Maybe,” he says. “I think it’s what he wanted from your mom and he’s waiting to see if you’re strong enough to survive the ritual that would complete the bond.”

I slump back against the couch. “And here I thought he’d want me to clean his house or something.”

“This is so much worse than that,” he says. “I’ve been trying to find ways around it among other things.”

“There’s more?” I ask, sitting back up. “Adrian, whatever it is, you have to tell me. No more secrets. I can’t take it.”

“Are you sure?” His brow furrows. “Some things can’t be unlearned. Once you know, it changes things.”

“Just tell me,” I say. I’m suddenly exhausted and I just want to get this over with. I’m tired of feeling awkward around Adrian. Tired of feeling my heart break every time I think about how he doesn’t want me. Tired of fighting to keep my place here.

“I have a theory and it’s going to sound crazy,” he says.

I wait while he seems to collect his thoughts.
