“Skylar is part demon, but she’s not the one we have helping us,” Xander said.

Fern smiled. “I’m half shifter, too. It’s a rare gift we have, being able to straddle two worlds.”

“I’m not sure about that,” I said.

She looked at Xander. “Have you guided her through her first shift yet?”

“I can’t shift,” I said.

“You share the bond with Xander. I can feel it.”

My mouth suddenly felt very dry. I licked my lips while I considered how to answer.

“Is this true, Xander?” Gerald asked. “You found your mate?”

“I’d rather not get into all this right now,” I finally said.

Fern smirked. “You realize that if you complete your bond, you will be able to shift.”

My heart raced and I could feel the blood rushing in my ears. Had she just said what I thought she said? The ability to shift? To turn into a wolf and run free like my father had?

“When you’re ready,” Fern said. “If you ever need to talk to someone who has been there, you can come to me. There are few of us half shifters who join a pack. But we’re out there. You’re not alone.”

Gerald stood. “Your half demon might be enough.”

“Enough for what?” I asked.

“To destroy the stone. Wait here.” He left the room, leaving me reeling with all this new information.

The ability to shift. The ability to destroy the stone. Was it possible I could get all the things I never knew I wanted? In my wildest dreams I never considered finding a true mate. As a half shifter, I didn’t think it was possible. Now, I’ve got two potential mates and I find out I might be able to shift? Add in the fact that my newfound demon side might be good for something after all. If I could destroy the stone, we had a chance at getting out of this alive.
