“What are you all standing around for?” A female voice called. “We have our orders.”

“She made hellfire. That’s final death. I didn’t sign up for that,” long hair vamp said.

“It’s gone now and I’d wager she doesn’t have another round in her.” A woman stepped up into the dim light. Her dark hair was pulled in a high ponytail and she was wearing tight black pants and a black jacket.

None of that was all that unusual. The part that made me stop was the gun she was holding by her side. It wasn’t aimed at us, but she was far more armed than we were.

“Finally, a face to face with the famous Lone Wolf and the Alpha.” She clicked her tongue. “I wish I was more impressed.”

“Well, I take it my reputation precedes me. But I have no idea who the fuck you are,” I said.

“I’m the one responsible for taking out your friends killer.” She grinned. “You’re welcome, by the way.”

My eyes widened. The assassin with the darts. A creeping chill crept across my skin. I saw the damage those darts did. There was no telling what they’d do to Xander.

“Want me to take her down?” Xander asked.

“Stay where you are, lover boy.” She didn’t lift the gun, but the threat in her tone was clear.

“Do what she says. Stay back. Those things were final death to a vampire. Elias barely survived.” I was going to have to risk doing this myself. No way would I let Xander take a chance with these things. Elias’s demon blood got him through. Maybe I’d survive if I got hit. Either way, I had to try.

I narrowed my eyes. “You picked the wrong hunter to mess with.”

She grinned. “I don’t think so. You’re outnumbered and you already used your fire. Hand over the stone.”

“No,” I said.

“Move in, fellas,” she called.

The vampires around me were smiling now. Their fear long gone. Slowly, they moved in closer to me.

I tried to find the heat, the anger, the power that made the hellfire rise. But it wasn’t there. I was too tired and I had no training on how to actually use the magic inside me. The assassin seemed awfully confident that I wasn’t a threat anymore. What if she was right? What if I could only use the fire once?

“She killed Morty,” a voice called. “Let’s return the favor.”

I was pretty sure I was about to be dinner.
