It felt like a boulder dropped into the pit of my stomach. She wasn’t talking about Elias, was she? It couldn’t be.

Crackling sounds tore through the night, followed by loud popping. The gathered vampires screamed and scrambled away from their viewing place.

The assassin turned toward the sound, lowering her weapon. I grabbed Xander’s hand and pulled him away. “Run.”

The ground rumbled and rolled, the asphalt cracking and rising as if we were in an earthquake. Green lightning sizzled across the ground, dancing over the destruction like wicked fireflies.

Xander and I made it back to the car but we weren’t alone. A familiar face greeted me with a smile.

“Hello, beautiful.” David’s voice was like syrup. Sweet, thick, and alluring. It filled my insides with a rush of desire that made me feel both infatuated and sick at the same time.

He was using magic on me. Asshole.

“What do you want?” I spat.

“How about a thank you for coming to your rescue,” he said.

I rolled my eyes as I walked backward toward the passenger door. The ground was still shifting, making movement more difficult than it should be. I didn’t care, though. I wanted the hell out of here. Away from David, the assassin, and all the vampires who wanted to kill us. “We’re good on the rescue front.”

Quickly, I pulled open the door and climbed in. Xander was already in the driver seat, turning the key in the ignition. It hummed and clicked. He turned it again. Click. Click. Click.

Xander glanced over at me. “It’s dead.”

“Fuck,” I looked out the windshield where David was staring at us. His arms were crossed over his chest and he wore a devious smile on his lips.

I opened the door.

“Skylar, wait!” Xander called.

“This is your fault. You killed our car.”

“I did no such thing,” David drawled. “I think you handled that on your own. I came to offer my assistance with your vampire problem, but if you don’t need my help…”

The ground evened out, the rumbling ceased.

“Over there!” Someone shouted. “Don’t let them get away.”

David was in front of me in a blink, his arms wrapping around me before I could register what was happening. He lifted me and we moved faster than I thought possible. I was vaguely aware of something speeding past us.

When he set me down, I saw the dart on the ground. David’s eyes met mine. “Still don’t want my help?”

I knew I’d been a moment away from getting shot. Breathless, I looked from the demon to the incoming assassin. She was reloading. I guess she wasn’t bluffing.

David left my side, heading right for the woman with the dart gun. Growling and screaming tore my eyes from his progress and I saw the hounds in their shifted forms, taking on vampires. They were ripping them limb from limb. Arms and legs flew into the air and several vampires were now running away from the battle instead of toward the fray.

It was like I was watching a war zone unfold in front of me, only it was as if time was moving slower. The assassin was still working to load her weapon, A vampire next to her was standing with her arm extended, index finger pointed at me. Things were moving so slow, it was as if they’d stopped.

I looked over at the vampire battle and noticed that they weren’t fighting back or fleeing anymore. The hounds were still ripping them apart, but the screams were gone.

My stomach lurched. Something unnatural was going on.

Footsteps brought me back to David. He was moving toward the assassin. She was holding her gun in front of her now, aimed right at me. But she wasn’t moving.

David reached the assassin and took the gun from her, then turned it on her. He pulled the trigger, releasing a dart into her chest before dropping the gun to the ground. The assassin stood there, frozen in place, numb to her new wound.

What the fuck was going on? I took a few steps. I could still move, but none of the others seemed to be able to. I looked back toward the car, Xander was right in front of the door, his hand still in the act of pushing it open. Time wasn’t working the way it should.

“A thank you would be appropriate,” David said.
