“We don’t have any leads right now,” she said. “I sent a few of my most discreet people to investigate. They have nothing. We have time.”

If not for Skylar, I might have been tempted. Simply to quell the anger rising in my chest. I wanted to lash out. I wanted to break something. Or fuck something.

Elias? Can you hear me?

Cain’s hand was on my back again, her other hand was trailing up my arm. I ignored it. My whole body tensed. “Did you hear something?”

“It’s just the two of us, baby,” Cain said.

I blocked Cain out, concentrating on the strange feeling in my gut. Skylar needed me. I swore I could hear her. I stepped away from Cain and closed my eyes, listening.

We need you. Please, Elias. Please hear me. We’re not at the safe house. There’s vampires. We went to the mortuary. Please come.

My eyes snapped open. Skylar needed me. I turned to Cain. “I have to go. Thank you for showing me that.”

“Wait! Don’t go!” Cain called as she grabbed my hand. “I miss you. I miss what we used to have.”

My brow furrowed as I looked into her eyes. She seemed genuine. Not that it changed anything between us, but I was surprised. “Cain, we can’t. There can’t be anything between us. I don’t feel things with you. It was just sex.”

Her eyes narrowed. “It’s that hunter, isn’t it? I saw the way you looked at her. She’s done something to you.”

“She’s my mate,” I admitted.

Cain dropped my hand. “No. She’s nobody. A half wolf. She’s not important, she’s not special. You’re going to be a king. You don’t want her.”

“Yes, I do,” I said.

Cain’s hand went to her chest and she lowered her eyes. “All this time, I really thought it would be us.”

“I’m sorry, Cain. It will never happen. I thought I made that clear when we first met?” My eyes traveled to her hand and I noticed her bare neck.

I reached for her and tugged the neckline of her shirt down a little.

“Well, that’s better,” she said, the sadness instantly replaced by a seductive coo.

“Where’s your necklace?” I took a step back.

“My what?” she asked.

“Your royal crest necklace,” I said. “I’ve never seen you without it.”

She reached up to her throat and feigned surprise. “I have no idea. I must have lost it.”

While her acting got me just a moment ago, she wasn’t pulling this off. I still had the gold necklace in my pocket. For a moment, I considered throwing it at her, letting her know I was aware of her betrayal.

Instead, I forced my lips into a smile. “You better find a new one. I don’t want anything bad to happen to you.”

“Thanks,” she said.

“I have to go. Let me know if you hear anything about Clara,” I said.

“Will do,” she said with over the top cheer.

As soon as I turned away from her, I had to force myself to hold in the rage I was feeling. I wanted to scream and tear things up.

Clara was alive and Cain was in on all of it.
