Chapter Fourteen

Skylar

I pulled my clothes on quickly while keeping my eyes on the approaching vehicle. It stopped a few doors down from the mortuary and a single figure emerged.

“That has to be Elias,” Xander said.

“It is.” I could feel him. A rush of relief at seeing him safe mingled with a flutter of guilt. I’d just been with Xander and here was Elias showing up to respond to my call for help.

My body was still tingling in response to my time with Xander as I exited the car. It was difficult to wrap my head around having two males in my life. I so rarely even had one. Once we got past the whole stopping a supernatural war thing, I was going to need to work some serious shit out. I wondered if there was a therapist who could help me talk through it. The conversation for that would be very interesting. I’m sure I’d be kicked out and told to enjoy my good fortune.

Maybe that’s how I’d feel about it if I wasn’t trying to destroy a moonstone. This thing had to go. It was throwing off everything in my life, including the good that had come from such a terrible situation.

Elias broke into a run when he saw me, colliding into me with open arms. He wrapped me up against him, lifting me in a tight embrace. “I’m so glad you’re safe.”

He set me down on the ground, taking hold of my hand. “I’ve had the queen’s goons on my tail all day. What did I miss?”

“I’m not even sure where to start,” I said.

“It’s been a long day,” Xander said. “But we might be able to destroy the stone.”

“How?” Elias asked.

“We found a spell in an ancient book,” I said.

“Where’s the book?” he asked.

“Thankfully, it’s in the car.” I had felt under the seat as soon as we started driving. Good thing Xander suggested we stash it. Otherwise, it would be with the vampires right now.

“Skylar says you need two demons,” Xander said.

“Want to give it a try?” I asked.

“You think me and you?” Elias pointed to himself, then me.

“I hope so,” I said. “Or we’re back at square one.”

“We’ve got some other problems,” Elias said. “Something’s going on with the vampires.”

“No shit,” Xander said. “We were attacked. And they had the assassin with them.”

“The one who shot you,” I said.

Elias’s brow furrowed. “The queen didn’t seem to know anything about the darts and that assassin killed a vampire. But she was there, working with them?”

“Could be Clover Coven,” I suggested. “They’re probably pretty pissed at us.”

“They wanted the stone,” Xander said. “Who told them about it?”

“Cain,” he said. “She’s involved in this somehow. Remember how I found that royal crest?”

I nodded, then looked at Xander. “One of the Clover Coven had a necklace with the Vampire Royal crest on it. The kind they reserve for family.”

“Exactly,” Elias said. “Cain was missing hers.”

“She’s probably the one who put the hit out on me too,” I said. “That bitch. Talk about an abuse of power.”

“Hit on you?” Elias asked.
