Xander frowned. “That’s true.”

“Hey, we’ve all got shit in our past,” I said. “Maybe that’s why the three of us are attempting to save the world.”

“Right,” Xander said. “I just wish we would have destroyed this thing years ago. It’s always seemed like it carried a curse with it.”

My shoulders slumped and I walked over to Xander. I slid my arm around his waist and hugged him. “Lola would be proud of us.”

He kissed the top of my head. “I know.”

“Where’s this spell you told me about?” Elias asked.

I walked toward the counter and set the heavy book down. Carefully, I turned the well-worn pages to the spell that looked like it would do the trick. “This is what I’ve got.”

Elias joined me by the counter and he started to skim through the pages.

The silence felt heavy as we waited.

Finally, he looked up. “We should try it. It just might work.”

“Yeah?” I asked, afraid to feel hope.

“What do you two need from me?” Xander asked.

“Keep watch,” Elias said. He extended his hand to me. “Shall we?”

I took his hand and after a quick apologetic glance at Xander, I followed Elias down the hall. We let ourselves into Heidi’s bedroom.

Her usual tidy room was a mess of scattered clothes and open drawers. It was clear she’d been in a hurry to get out. Her bed was made, likely from the day before, but the evidence of a rush was clear.

The closet was open and the little table she used for makeup was covered in various products. The mess actually made me feel a little better. She’d taken my advice and left town. At least I could breathe easier knowing she was away from this for now.

Elias let go of my hand and started moving some of the abandoned clothes to the side, clearing a space in the center of the room.

I helped him finish and then the two of us silently settled into places on the ground.

“I have no idea if this will work,” Elias said. “Or what the payment will be.”

I shuddered. All magic had a price. Even if it wasn’t obvious.

“We have to try.” I barely knew how to use the newfound magic I had and I still didn’t understand any of it, but if it was enough to end this, I was in.

Carefully, I opened the locket and retrieved the stone. It was warm and glowing faintly. The time inside the locket hadn’t seemed to dim it. I set the stone down on the ground between us.

Elias extended his hands. “We connect our magic, creating a link for our fire. Then we release and form a circle around the stone.”

“And try not to burn down my friend’s apartment in the process,” I said.

He grinned. “We’ll be fine. Hellfire works differently than other fire.”

I let out a breath. “When we’re done with this, you’re going to have to give me some lessons.”

“I’d be happy to,” he said.

I swallowed. “Ready when you are.”

“Concentrate on your fire, find that place where your magic ignites within and when you release, try to hold it in your palms. I think I can guide it from there.”

“Okay,” I said, unsure if I could pull it off.
