Chapter Fifteen

Skylar

Xander was pacing the living room. He stopped and looked up, his expression hopeful, as I approached. When he saw the look on my face, his shoulders fell.

“It didn’t work,” he said.

I shook my head. “We need a full demon.”

He lifted an eyebrow. “Most of the demons I meet want to kill me.”

“We might have a solution,” Elias said.

“Don’t you say it,” Xander said. “I’ve spent enough time around that brother of yours.”

“Not him,” I said. “Elias’s sister might be alive. If we can find her, she’ll help.”

“How?” Xander asked but his focus didn’t linger on us long. He turned and raced toward me. “Get down!”

Just as Xander slammed into me, I noticed movement at the curtains that covered the sliding glass door.

Something small whizzed past me as I fell to the ground, Xander on top of me. His body was heavy on me, but he didn’t linger long. Almost as soon as we landed, he was up and charging toward the window.

“Stay back, Skylar,” Elias yelled.

Both males moved forward and I scrambled to my feet. There was no way in hell I was going to stand back here trembling like a damsel in distress. I cautiously walked forward.

Xander reached the window first, throwing open the curtains. There was nobody there. The door was open and a cool night breeze blew in.

I raced forward and followed Xander and Elias out onto the tiny porch. A figure slipped into shadows. “It can’t be. I saw her get shot.”

“It was,” Xander said with a growl. “She’s a fast healer.”

Anger surged through me. She tried to kill Elias and she’d tried to kill Xander. Maybe she wanted to kill me. That didn’t make me as pissed as the thought of her continuing to come after my mates.

I didn’t even flinch at the thought. It was what it was. Both of these males weremine. And I wasn’t about to let anyone hurt them.

I jumped over the little half wall that surrounded the concrete slab that was Heidi’s patio and took off at a run.

“Skylar!” Both of my mates were shouting after me but I didn’t look back. I couldn’t let her get away again.

Racing forward, I darted in front of a car, ignoring the blaring of the horn. I couldn’t lose her. I had to take her down.

Heat simmered in my belly, my insides felt like they were on fire. I welcomed it, knowing it was my hellfire returning. I didn’t have any weapons but I was making my own fire now. The poison in her darts were too dangerous to use against supernaturals. I couldn’t let her continue her attacks.

I weaved through the tress where I’d last seen her. My whole body tingled in anticipation as I slowed enough to scan the landscape. We were in a tiny patch of grass with a few park benches and a walking path. A miniature park dotted with trees and lined with buildings behind them.

A flicker of movement caught my eye and I lunged forward, catching sight of the assassin.

Without waiting, I lifted my hands. Fire roared to life, shooting forward in an arc that made contact with my target.

Consequences be dammed. I didn’t care if a human walked by. I didn’t care what her excuse was or that she wasn’t on my bounty list. She’d signed her own death warrant when she came after us.

The woman cried out in pain, an excruciating scream that shook me from my anger. Suddenly, the hatred that had been driving me subsided and I released the flames, dropping my hands to my side.

Through the cries, the assassin was rolling around on the ground, her clothing smoking but the flames gone.

“What’s going on here?” Xander said, panting as he arrived next to me.
