Chapter Sixteen

Skylar

I wasn’t sure where I should go. I knew I couldn’t drive to the mortuary, and I certainly couldn’t go back to Heidi’s place.

“What happened?” Elias asked.

“Your brother called me,” I said. “He used Heidi’s landline so I answered.”

“Your friend still has a landline?” Xander asked.

“Yes, that’s not the point. The point is he asked me to meet him.”

“That’s not going to happen,” Xander said.

“Maybe it should,” I said, not quite believing the words coming out of my mouth. “He knew the spell didn’t work and he said it was because we didn’t have a normal moonstone. Whatever that means.”

“He’s trying to trick you,” Xander said.

“Maybe,” Elias agreed.

I turned down a random neighborhood and pulled up alongside someone’s house. After stopping the car, I adjusted my position so I could better see both males. “We are running out of options and the stakes are getting higher. We can’t let anyone else get a hold of this stone and I don’t want to die for it.”

“We aren’t going to let that happen,” Elias said.

Xander growled.

“We need another demon. Even if he’s bluffing and there’s nothing weird about the stone, we need a full demon. My magic wasn’t enough.” I looked at Elias. “Plus, there’s the news about Clara.”

Elias looked down and took a deep breath before lifting his gaze to me. “If she’s alive, David should know.”

“Isn’t he the bad guy?” Xander said.

“He’s after the stone, but I’m not sure why,” Elias said. “We can’t let him have it.”

“What about your sister?” I asked.

“He’ll want to find her. He’ll probably want to complete the deal he started. When she died, it disrupted his plans. We can use that to our advantage,” Elias said.

I considered his words. If we could play David to our advantage, it might be worth trying. “Do you really think she’s alive?” I hoped she was, for Elias’s sake, but how could we trust the information?

“None of it makes sense,” Elias said. “If she’s still alive, she’d let us know. She wouldn’t have faked her death then reappeared later.”

“I never got the details on this,” Xander said. “Why do you think she’s alive after all this time?”

“There was a video of her stealing jewelry,” Elias said. “It doesn’t make sense, but it looked just like her.”

“Where did you see this video?” Xander asked.

“Cain showed me right before I met up with you two,” he said.

“Cain?” Xander said. “You trust her? At this point, it’s pretty clear the queen is pulling all the strings. Why not fake something with your sister to get you to play into her hands?”

Heat swirled around the interior of the car as if someone had just blasted the thermostat to high. I knew it was Elias.

I reached out and set my hand on his shoulder. “Hey, we’re going to figure this out.”

“The question is, was it old footage or was it something new?” Xander asked. “Is it possible the queen could have been keeping your sister from you?”
