I grinned. This felt more normal to me. Coming up with a plan to corner a suspect and preparing to fight. The running and hiding wasn’t my style. I was used to being on the offensive.

“Anyone know where we can get some weapons?” I was going to be pissed if I couldn’t get back to Shelly’s safe house and get my knife.

“I think that fire you conjure is plenty,” Elias said. “If he comes at you, throw those flames and run.”

I frowned. Back to the running. I was really looking forward to being done with this whole mess. If the queen was the one who put the bounty on me, I wondered if I could get it reversed when this was behind us. Or was I going to have to do like Xander mentioned and flee?

I’d called Harbor Crossing home for so long, I wasn’t sure I wanted to start over. But I knew the queen’s power wasn’t as strong in other territories. There were more vampire royals who ruled over neighboring areas. Some of them were connected by ancient treaties and even blood ties. But there had to be someone who didn’t like her enough to let me stay. I had skills, I was good at what I did. I could probably carve out a life somewhere new.

The one thing stopping me was the two males sitting in the car with me. My heart ached at the thought of leaving either of them. I knew I wanted to be with them, but I was used to not always getting what I wanted.

We were silent until we were back in Old Town. My chest was tight, my heart felt like it was sitting in my stomach. I asked to meet David alone but I can’t deny that I was having second thoughts.

He’d held back twice. Would he do it again?

I parked the hearse a few blocks away and turned off the engine. The vehicle seemed far too ominous now that I was preparing to walk into a meeting with a rogue demon.

What the fuck was I thinking?

“We’ll be right outside,” Xander said.

“Not too close,” I said. “I don’t want him running away.”

“We’ll stay hidden,” Elias said. “But if anything feels even a little bit off, you call for us and you get out.”

“I will.” Even as I said the words, I wasn’t sure I would. I couldn’t handle it if anything happened to either of them.

I set my hand on the door handle, then dropped it to reach for my necklace. Quickly, I unclasped it, then held it out. “Who wants to babysit this for me?”

Xander stretched out his hand and I dropped the locket into his large palm. He closed his fingers around it. “Be careful.”

“I will.” I opened the door and slipped out of the car, not looking back.

My breath came out in clouds. It had gotten a lot colder since my earlier trip to the mortuary. Was that just tonight? I was pretty sure this had been the longest night of my entire life.

If I survived this, I was going to need a bubble bath and a really long nap. Though, I wasn’t sure when that would happen. If I couldn’t convince David to help us, who knew what was coming next. The thought of having to flee weighed heavily on me. I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life on the run. What kind of life would that be? Even if I took that path, there was a good chance I’d end up like Lola.

I shivered and it wasn’t from the cold. My best friend hadn’t experienced so much. I knew she dreamed of getting married, of having a family. She had so much life ahead of her and that vampire had stolen it all. And he stole her from me.

Heat simmered low in my belly as I let the anger rise.Good. I was starting to recognize the feeling of my hellfire brewing. It was my only weapon and instead of freaking me out, it was almost comforting.

The better I could control it, the more useful it would be. Sure, my whole life had been turned upside down when I discovered I was half demon. Had I dealt with any of it yet? Did I likely need years of therapy? You bet. But now wasn’t the time. For now, I was grateful there was something inside me that could keep me safe.

I hoped.

My shoes crunched over the gravel driveway as I approached the mortuary. The sign in the door was flipped toopenand I couldn’t remember if it had been like that earlier this evening. The light shining through the windows was for sure new.

The door opened, revealing a warm, glowing entryway into the building. David wasn’t at the door. I frowned, figuring he was going for dramatic effect or some shit.

If there was anything I’d learned about David so far, it was that he was far from subtle.

Let’s get this over with.

I walked up the stone steps toward the waiting door, then stepped inside. The door slammed behind me.

“Nice to see you again, love,” David drawled as he stepped toward me. He was wearing dark jeans and a very tight white tee that looked far too good on him. His fair hair was messy in a sexy way and his green eyes sparkled.

I had to remind myself that he was dangerous even if he looked delicious. “What am I doing here, David?”
