“Then what’s in this for me?” He leaned against the door jamb, his arms casually folded over his chest. “Why would I agree to help you?”

“Because it’s possible your sister is alive. And if you help me with this, I can help you find her. I know this realm. I have contacts. You need me.”

He dropped his arms and turned toward me, his whole body a tell for how he felt about this news. His shoulders slumped, his brow furrowed. He turned away from me and ran his hand through his hair before facing me. “Why would you say such a thing? Using this to try to manipulate me is below the belt.”

“I’m not trying to manipulate you,” I said. “Clara is important to Elias, which means she’s important to me.”

He scowled. “Elias is the cause of this mess in the first place.”

“He told me you’d say that, but Clara was a big girl. She could make her own choices,” I said.

“He told you how he arranged a marriage for Clara with the leader of the Knights?” David’s hands balled into fists and I could feel the heat rising around him. It seemed to flow from him in waves.

“What are you talking about?” I said. “He wouldn’t do that.”

“He did,” David said. “That’s why he’s here to try to fix his mess. He was thrown out for his poor judgement. Choosing to align with the Knights wasn’t a little mistake. Like I told you before, you fell for the wrong brother. Elias is a disgraced prince with a dark past. If you knew half the things he’s done, you’d be staying as far away as you could.”

“That’s impossible. Elias isn’t perfect, but none of us are,” I said. “I’ve got my share of misdeeds.”

“Are you lumping yourself into all this?” David asked. “You hunt supernaturals. But I’ve studied your lists. You went after the worst of the worst and only if you had legal jurisdiction. You don’t stir the pot for fun.”

He turned so his body was blocking the entire door. “You and me aren’t so different.”

“Don’t give me that bullshit,” I snapped. “Elias said you were trying to start a war.”

“I am,” he said.

“Then don’t compare yourself to me,” I said. “We’re nothing alike.”

I caught the flash of anger in his eyes for a split second before he closed the distance between us. My breath caught, and my eyes widened. I gripped my knife, ready to use it if I had to.

David’s hands moved to my cheeks, holding my face between his palms. He stared at me with an intensity I could feel in my bones. Then he pressed his lips to mine.
