Chapter Seventeen

Skylar

I pushed David away. “What are you doing?”

“You don’t need to fight the attraction between us,” he said.

“You’re insane.” I turned away from him and walked into the bedroom. I was still clutching my knife but the urge to use it wasn’t there. He’d kissed me and I had to fight the instinct to kiss him back. What was wrong with me?

“You aren’t giving in to your demon half,” he said. “I can feel your magic reaching for me. Your very soul wants this.”

I spun around to face him. “I don’t give a damn what you think you feel. You’ve been hunting me. Your hellhounds attacked me and my friends. You’re a monster.”

“Am I?” He sounded amused.

“Either you help us, or you leave us alone. I’m tired of the games.” I marched toward him and pushed by him to walk through the door. He didn’t follow me. I brushed off the strange sensation that wanted him to. There was a part of me that was curious about David. What it would feel like to kiss him back, to let his hands explore my body.

Fuck.

I shook the thought away and continued toward the front door of the apartment. If I couldn’t get back through the portal, I’d leave this way and find my own ride back.

Sure, there could be vampires outside the place waiting to take me out, but I’d have to take my chances. There was no way I was going to wait it out in here with David.

I unlocked the deadbolt and turned the doorknob. It didn’t budge. Brow furrowed, I tried again, pulling harder as I turned.

Nothing.

I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. I should have realized it wasn’t going to be this easy. There was a reason he didn’t bother to follow me to the door.

I turned around to see David still in the doorway of the bedroom. He was leaning casually against the doorjamb with a grin on his face. “Something wrong, darling?”

“Let me out.”

“No.”

“Dammit, David. This isn’t funny. Xander and Elias are waiting for me. They could be in danger. Let me the fuck out of here,” I demanded.

“No.” He walked toward me. “It’s impossible. The ward won’t let anyone in or out until sunrise so you might as well get comfortable.”

“What are you even talking about?” I asked.

“I paid the healer. She said it would hold,” he said.

“Shelly’s in on this?” I asked.

“Once I explained what was going on, she saw things my way,” he said.

“You mean once you tricked her? Or compelled her? Can demons do that?” My heart was racing. What if Shelly was hurt or unaware of what she was doing? I’d dropped that assassin off at her place.

“No compulsion needed,” he said. “I told you, I’m not the one on the wrong side of all this.”

“I don’t have time for your games,” I said. “And if you’re trying to get that stone from me, you’re out of luck. I don’t have it.”

He was in front of me so fast, I didn’t see him move. “What do you mean you don’t have it?”

I smiled at him, feeling triumphant. This whole thing was about the stone. He thought he could make a play for it. Trick me or seduce me or whatever else his plan was. And he failed. “I don’t have it.”

“Tell me you didn’t give it to my brother,” he said.
