Chapter Eighteen

David

Skylar was standing in the doorway, completely still, as if lost in thought. That’s when I realized that when she said she was going to sleep, she literally meant sleeping. Not just an excuse to get away from me. I forgot that she was new to being part demon. Her human habits were still controlling her. I couldn’t remember the last time I’d slept. It wasn’t needed for a demon and my guess was that it was rarely needed for her.

I moved to where she was standing and grabbed her wrist. “You’re not going to sleep.”

“No?” She looked at me as if she might punch me.

I fought the urge to smile at her expression. She was even sexier when she looked pissed. I wasn’t sure I’d ever met a female who was more attractive when she was mad. I usually tended to avoid women who were upset.

“Let me go, David,” she said.

“You don’t need to keep falling back on these human behaviors,” I said. “You do realize that sleeping is optional for a demon.”

“I’m not a full demon,” she said.

“Yes, but your other half is a wolf. Not a human. Has anyone ever taught you how to harness your power?” I asked.

“I didn’t know I was a demon until recently, as you already knew.”

“You got training, that’s clear from how you fight, but you fight like a human. Just faster. You’re missing out on all the benefits of being supernatural.” I wasn’t sure why it was suddenly so important for me to help her.

Sure, I wanted to strip her clothes and kiss every inch of her naked skin, but this was more than sex. I realized she was vulnerable as long as she was involved in all this. Especially since I now knew she wasn’t going to back down. And I wanted her to be protected.

I’d seen the way she could fight. She could hold her own against the usual offenders. But we were talking about the vampire queen and her elite guard. That was another level of danger she wasn’t used to.

But vampires were no match for a demon. If Skylar could learn how to harness some of her magic, she’d have a greater chance at success should things grow beyond my control. If I wasn’t able to protect her, I wanted her to be able to defend herself.

The notion of wanting to protect her was bizarre, but I pushed it aside, telling myself it was because I wanted her. It was rare for me to receive rejection in any form. Skylar was a challenge I had to conquer.

“I can take care of myself just fine,” she said.

“I know you can,” I said. “But what if you could be better? You can’t tell me you’d feel ready to take on the queen alone.”

“I won’t be alone,” she said.

“How many times have I managed to get you away from your friends?” I asked.

She frowned. “Even if I agreed that I wanted to learn more, why would you help me? And what could we possibly cover in one night?”

“Consider it a way of ensuring my new partner can carry her weight,” I said.

She narrowed her eyes. “I don’t like the sound of that.”

“Listen, if we’re going to team up on this, I can’t be wasting my time saving your ass.”

She tugged her arm away from me and spun to face me. “I’ve been holding my own as a hunter for a long time. I did just fine until you showed up.”

“Maybe you shouldn’t be directing your anger at me. I’m pretty sure Elias is the one who first threw a wrench in your plans,” I said.

“You don’t know anything,” she said. “Elias helped me. You’ve done nothing but threaten me. If it weren’t for the fact that we’re out of options, I wouldn’t even be here with you.”

“So you might as well take me up on my offer while you’re stuck.” I walked back to the living area and shoved the coffee table against the window to give us more open space.

Skylar was still standing in the doorway but her posture wasn’t as tense as it had been before.

“What are you waiting for?” I asked.
