I lifted an eyebrow. “Really?”

“What is that supposed to mean? Does that tell you anything?”

“I can read emotions, too,” I said. “While there are some types of demons who also have that gift, it’s common among incubi and succubi. I think it’s possible that’s what you are but you haven’t fully awakened that part yet,” I said.

“I think if that was true, it would be awake,” she snapped.

“Not necessarily.” I noticed a pink flush on her cheeks and narrowed my eyes to study her closer. “What are you hiding?”

I could sense a flicker of embarrassment, and something else, a connection, a bond, maybe? My heart thundered against my ribs. It wasn’t a bond with me, but it was familiar. “You and Elias?”

Her eyes snapped to mine. “If I was going to wake anything up, it would have happened.”

I laughed. “Are you embarrassed about having sex with my brother?”

Her eyes widened, then she pressed her lips together and marched toward me. She shoved me. “Quit laughing.”

“I’m sorry,” I couldn’t stop the laughter, “you’re embarrassed about having sex with an incubus. While sharing that information with an incubus. You do realize how we work, right? I’ve explained it to you. Sex is about energy for us. It’s not personal.”

“You’re an asshole and you don’t know anything about me or your brother or what sex between us means,” she said.

I stopped laughing. The tone in her voice was accusatory and defensive. It took me off guard. I assumed that Elias had bedded her for the same reason I wanted to. Because she was gorgeous and powerful and vibrating with delicious energy unlike any other being I’d been with. I assumed it was her hybrid nature that made her seem so appealing, but I was starting to suspect that Elias wasn’t in it for the same reason as me.

Or at least he’d convinced her it meant more than just sex.

Anger mixed with jealousy, clawing its way through my chest. How dare he do that to her? I was a lot of things, but I’d never led a woman on or made her think sex was more than a fun way to pass the time.

“He’s got you wrapped around his little finger, doesn’t he?” I asked. “I wasn’t sure how hard he got to you until now.”

“You know what,” she waved her hand in front of me, “none of that is your business. Let’s move on. Magic. Are you going to help me or not?”
