Chapter Nineteen

Skylar

I couldn’t believe what he was saying. David didn’t understand that there could be more to sex than just the physical piece. Granted, that’s what I thought I was getting with Elias when we started. But it turned out to be so much more.

The thought of reducing what we had to a session meant to recharge our magic felt cheap. I didn’t like it. And that was what it had started out as. I went into sex with Elias as a way to help him heal. But it turned into something more. I shouldn’t be so hard on David. He didn’t know and I wasn’t prepared to discuss my confusing love life with him.

I still couldn’t trust him but I was stuck with him. If he was going to help me with some of this magic in the meantime, I might as well take him up on it.

“You’re right,” David said. “I really don’t want to hear about my brother’s sex life anyway. He always got more booty being the regent and all.”

I glared at him. “Not helping, David.”

“Right,” he said. “Magic. Okay. So you know where to find your magic. It’s a good idea to have a seat and focus while you’re learning. You can close your eyes and really feel for it. Once you have the hang of it better, you can connect while in the middle of pretty much anything.”

That made sense, I supposed. I glanced around the room and decided the threadbare couch was my best option. It wasn’t an ideal place to try to find my Zen or my magic, rather, but it was what I had.

I settled in on the couch and tucked my legs under me. “Just close my eyes and find the magic then send the energy through me?”

David nodded.

I took a deep breath and closed my eyes. I could feel David’s stare but I tried to ignore it. It wasn’t like there was anywhere for him to go. And if I was going to ever do this on the go, I’d have to learn how to overcome distractions.

It was still so strange to consider that I was tapping into demon magic. Demons weren’t even supposed to exist in this realm, yet here I was. And then there was Elias and David. And his hellhounds.

I opened one eye and looked at David.

“You’re not concentrating,” he said.

I opened my other eye. “Where are your hellhound friends?”

“That’s not important,” he said.

“Where are they?” I demanded.

“They were outside the mortuary. They were told to keep anyone out who might try to follow us,” he said.

“Like Elias and Xander,” I said.

He nodded.

I climbed off the couch and marched over to him. “Call them back.”

“How? If you haven’t noticed, the ward has us sealed in.”

I shook my head and covered my face with my hands. How had I gotten caught up in being friendly with David? He wasn’t a friend.

“What are they going to do to them?” I asked.

“They’ll keep them out,” he said.

“How?”

“Whatever means necessary,” he said. “I needed to ensure we would be able to talk alone.”

“Well, you did that. And now we’re stuck here and my friends are at risk,” I said.

“If your friends are smart, they’ll flee before things get too bad,” he said.
