Chapter Twenty-One

Skylar

David’s words made everything too real. I pulled away, a little more clear now than I had been in the haze of sex and lust. Giving in to primal urges or something. But it was more than that.

“Did I scare you?” he asked, his words gentle.

“It’s a lot to take in,” I admitted. “I feel the bond, but until just now, you and I were on opposite sides.”

“We’ve never been on opposite sides,” he said. “Even when I was chasing you, there was no way I could have ever hurt you. And now I know why.”

“What does this mean?” I asked, almost afraid of the answer. This was so different than how things had gone with the others. This time, I was the one who said it first.

“It means that our souls are connected. You are mine, and I am yours,” he said.

It was a beautiful sentiment, but I couldn’t deny the complications it was going to cause.

“I sort of wondered if you and Elias had a bond based on the way you were talking about him,” he said.

“I do.” I let the words hang there for a minute, avoiding his eyes while I let him process everything.

He stood and walked toward the window. I looked up and I couldn’t help but admire his sculpted shoulders and muscled back that tapered down to his hips. His firm, round ass was on full display and arousal tickled my insides.

Stop it, Skylar.

I shouldn’t be doing this right now. David was smoking hot. He was probably every woman’s fantasy. I know I had no complaints about his body or the way he used it.

That was part of the problem. I already had two mates, adding a third made my head spin. Especially when that third had been hunting me for the last few days.

I was still trying to figure out how we’d gone from opposite sides to the same team to fucking so quickly. Was my libido seriously that out of control? Maybe I was part succubus. Maybe I needed sex the way David and Elias did.

I didn’t feel different after sex. I didn’t feel recharged or energized. At the moment, all I was feeling was confusion.

Wasn’t meeting a mate supposed to be wonderful and all that Hallmark card shit? Well, I’m calling bullshit on the whole fantasy. I now had three mates and none of them had swept me off my feet with romance.

David turned around. “The wolf too?”

I nodded.

“Well, I have to admit, it’s not what I expected,” he said.

“Trust me, it wasn’t planned on my part,” I said.

He walked back over to me and sat down next to me. “Listen, you’re my mate. I will be loyal to you and I will protect you no matter who your other mates are. Mates are forever and I will honor that bond.”

I let out a breath I didn’t know I’d been holding. A huge rush of relief flowed through me. Until that moment, I didn’t realize how badly I needed him to agree to be with me. I wasn’t sure how I was going to manage three mates, but I couldn’t bear the thought of choosing. They were all a part of me, even if our time together had been short. I wanted to spend the next several decades getting to know them.

“What now?” I asked.

“I suppose you’re going to have to explain this to your other mates,” he said.

“What about when we get out of here? The stone, and the queen, and Clara?” I asked.

He smiled. “Bypassing the whole three mates to deal with thing and straight to saving the world. You are the most unusual female I’ve ever met.”

“Unless we get the targets off our ass and fix things, there won’t be more time to enjoy each other’s company. We’ll all be dead,” I said.

“True.” His fingers gently brushed against my temple and he moved some stray hair back. “As soon as the sun rises, we’re out of here.”
