“I’ve got one in mind, but you’re not going to like it,” Xander said.

He pulled the car in front of the apartment. The building looked even more worn down in the weak morning light than it had in the dark. I couldn’t feel Skylar’s presence, but I wasn’t surprised. The apartment was warded and should block the ability to sense her. It was also why I thought she was here. She hadn’t reached out to me since she vanished. Which meant that she was being prohibited from communicating via magic, or she was dead.

I tensed at the thought, pushing it from my mind. It was impossible. They said if your mate was killed, you felt it in your very soul. As if part of you was ripped out.

She had to be alive.

“You think it’s just your brother we’ll find or should we be prepared for more?” Xander asked as he turned off the engine.

“I’m not sure,” I said.

“You want to tell me those demon killing tricks now? That brother of yours has taken things too far this time,” Xander said with a growl.

“We might need him,” I said. “I don’t like it either, but if anyone can convince him to help us, it’s Skylar. After we get that stone destroyed, I might be up for sharing those details.”

“I’m going to hold you to it,” he said.

We walked toward the building and with each step closer, I could feel the weight of the ward. It hung heavy around the building, making each step feel like I was walking through knee deep water. No wonder the vampires had guessed this building was the one. The ward extended ten feet from the building’s edge.

“They have to be in there,” I said.

“Can you feel her?” Xander asked.

“No, but that ward isn’t letting anything in or out,” I said.

A beam of sunlight streamed through the buildings behind us, hitting the apartment glass. I winced and turned away from the blinding light reflecting back at us.

Suddenly, the ground vibrated and a sound like a rubber band snapping echoed around us. I struggled to stay on my feet. A wave of magic rushed through me, making me gasp.

Then I could feel her.

Skylar’s presence hit me like a ton of bricks. My eyes widened and I glanced over at Xander. His expression told me he was feeling the same thing. She was in there. And she was alive.

I ran to the front door of the building.Skylar, we’re coming for you. Hold on.
