“No.” I looked at Xander. Last I saw him, he’d had my mother’s locket around his neck. He’d also been naked. He was now wearing clothes, but he wasn’t wearing my necklace.

“It was the only way,” David said.

“You three agreed on this?” I asked, surprised.

“Trust me, if there was another option that allowed us to leave with you alive, we’d have taken it,” David said.

“So that’s it, then? The queen wins. She’ll start a war and we’ll all be fucked.” I couldn’t believe it was going to end like this. Weren’t we the good guys? Weren’t the good guys supposed to win?

“We’re going to try to get it back from her,” Xander said.

“How? I can’t imagine her palace is easy to break into,” I said.

“Am I hearing this right?” Madison asked. “The vampire queen, the one who enslaved me, is trying to start a war?”

I looked over at her. It was still odd to see her as anything other than a threat. “Yes.”

“My day keeps getting weirder,” she said.

I gave her what I hoped was a sympathetic smile, then looked back at my mates. “Is that even possible? To get the stone back?”

“You need someone who can get in, right?” Madison asked.

We all looked over at her.

“She doesn’t know I don’t work for her, right? What if I help?” She shrugged.

“I can’t ask you to do that. If she found out, she’d kill you on the spot,” I said.

“I’m helping. You don’t have a choice. I don’t want that psycho to have power over anyone else. I want payback,” she said.

I considered for a moment. Madison had experienced the very thing we were trying to prevent from happening to shifters. If the queen used that stone, she could manufacture more stones and enslave all shifters. They would have no choice but to do her bidding.

“I think we have a new member of the gang,” David said.

“I agree,” I said. “I think it’s our best option. Besides, we have to find out where Clara is. Madison might be able to find out.”

Shelly walked into the room and stopped in the middle. “None of you are going anywhere until I clear you first.”

“Does that mean we have a medic?” David teased.

Shelly scowled. “I don’t have much choice, do I? If your lot fail, mages are fucked.”

I knew that was probably true. Mages and vampires had a complicated history. All supernaturals had a complicated history. Especially with vampires.

“I guess I’ll order some dinner. It’s going to be a long night,” Shelly said.
