David opened his other eye and dropped his feet to the ground. “That’s an oddly specific question. Why the sudden interest in his whereabouts? Should I scurry home and check the archives?”

“Don’t be an asshole. It involves Skylar. And unless I’m mistaken, I think you might actually care about her.”

He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. “Of course I care about her. I’m not the one who’s been lying to her.”

“I’ve never lied to Skylar,” I said.

“Oh?” David stood and took a step toward me. “So Clara is here because you were benevolent and wanted what was best for her?”

“That’s not fair,” I said. “She had a duty to do, just like the rest of us.”

“What would your beloved think of that? Sending your own sister to be married off like cattle?” David said.

“You know she was willing to go,” I said.

“You gave her no choice,” David said.

“Forget it. I’ll figure it out myself.” I turned and walked out of the kitchen.

“Dad took a trip after Amber died.”

I stopped walking and froze. Amber was my first love. We never had a true bond, I know that now, but I thought we might. She was fae royalty and my father should have encouraged the match based on the alliances it would provide.

Only he tried everything he could to dissuade us. His seer had predicted that I would grow to be the greatest king in history if I found my true mate. I had totally forgotten about the prophecy until now. It seemed ridiculous and unimportant. I was in love with Amber and I was willing to stay with her and give up the search for a mate.

I turned around and looked at my brother. “Dad visited an Oracle when he was here. When he returned, he exiled Skylar’s mom.”

“Holy shit.” David sat back down. “You think he found out that she was going to be your mate’s mother?”

“I guess so,” I said. “That’s an oddly specific prophecy.”

“Fuck. Wonder if he knew we’d share the same mate,” he said.

“I don’t know.”

“Your daddy issues are going to have to wait,” Shelly said.

I turned, surprised that she’d snuck up on me.

“Madison’s awake.” Shelly turned and left the kitchen. I followed her up the stairs to the bedroom, David at my heels.

Madison was sitting up in the bed, her hand on her forehead and her eyes closed. She didn’t look great.

“How are you feeling?” I asked.

She opened her eyes with a start, her whole body tensing as she scrambled away from us. “Who the fuck are you people?”

My heart sank. “You don’t remember us?”

“Great, we broke her,” David said.

I elbowed him.

“Do you know where you are?” Shelly asked, her tone kind and gentle.

Madison looked around, her eyes wide with terror. She was clearly confused. “Should I?”

“Yeah, you should,” David said.
