Chapter Seven

David

Things were complicated with Elias having his claws in my mate. I have to admit, I wanted her to myself, but there wasn’t anything I could do about that. I didn’t even care that my father might have had something to do with her being born in the first place. It didn’t matter. I just wanted her.

Since unlocking that bond with Skylar, she was all I could think about. Having her away from me was painful. The sooner we got this whole mess done with, the sooner I could get her away for some quality time alone.

I didn’t give a shit about the moonstone. I had no concern for this realm. But the queen had made a threat on Skylar’s life and I didn’t think it would end if we walked away.

It wasn’t just about getting the moonstone back. In fact, it wasn’t about that at all. It was only about eliminating the threat on Skylar. Which meant the queen had to go.

Sure, it could complicate things diplomatically, but I’m not in line to be king. That’s Elias’s business. If he happens to get dragged down and sent home that wasn’t my problem.

I’d be right here to keep Skylar company while he went off to deal with the fallout of the death of the Vampire queen.

The thing in our way right now was the lack of memory from the assassin. She was only good to us if she could get us into the palace. That was her whole purpose and the only reason I agreed to help.

It was taking far too long and I was tired of the awkward silence between me and Elias. Not that having a heart to heart was on my mind in any way.

I stood and walked toward the stairs.

“Where are you going?” Elias asked.

“To the pub, you want a pint?” I asked.

Elias frowned.

“Good to see you still don’t have a sense of humor.” I turned away from him and walked up the stairs. The door was still closed to the bedroom the human was occupying and from the magical vibrations coming from the door, I could tell the mage was in there with her.

I pressed my ear to the door and listened. It was silent. We didn’t have all day to sit around and do nothing. I turned the handle and peeked in. “Any word?”

Shelly and Madison both looked up at me.

“We’re making some progress,” Shelly said.

“As in she remembers what we need?” I asked.

“As in I remember that you’re kind of an asshole,” Madison snapped.

“Hey, that is progress. Anything I can help with?” I asked.

“No, give us a little more time,” Shelly said.

I resisted the urge to roll my eyes. What did she think we’d been doing? It was nothing but time. We’d been waiting hours already. Either the spell worked or it didn’t, right?

“David, you might want to come down here,” Elias called.

“That’s my cue,” I said as I closed the door. Now I was going to get a lecture from my brother. It had been a few hundred years, so I supposed it was due. Do older brothers ever stop trying to tell you how you’re supposed to do things?

As I took the final steps, I realized Elias wasn’t alone in the living room. “Jasper?” I picked up the pace and walked faster toward my friend. “What’s going on? Why aren’t you at the palace?”

“There’s been an incident,” he said with a growl.

I’d known Jasper and Hadrian most of my life. I knew Elias didn’t approve of my choice of friends, but there were not more loyal friends to be found. I trusted them with all my secrets. I trusted them with my life. Hell, I’d trust them with Skylar’s life.

“What happened?” I asked. “Where’s Hadrian?”

“He’s still there, watching. Like we were instructed. But you needed to know this now.” He glanced at Elias, then looked back at me. I could tell he was hesitating to tell me something in front of my brother. Decades of mistrust were difficult to erase. I wasn’t there yet myself.
