“Xander!” I moved closer to his wolf. The three males were facing off, staring each other down, teeth bared, hackles raised. They were ready to fight. And I was standing in the middle of them.

I clearly had a death wish.

“Xander, we have to go,” I shouted.

He nudged me with his nose, trying to push me out of the way, then he moved forward, closer to the other two wolves.

Anger heated my chest and something wild and untamed roared to life. It was my wolf, and she wanted out bad.

Her mate was in danger, and she wasn’t going to let him get his ass kicked by anyone.

I gave in to the call of my wolf. I pulled off my jacket and my pants, tossing them aside. Then, my body crumbled, folding in on itself as my bones reshaped. I cried out in pain as the change took me. It was over quickly, the pain subsiding as fast as it came.

My wolf was pissed.

I moved next to Xander, joining him in the stare down as we faced his friends. I wasn’t sure which was Mateo or which was Johnny, but it didn’t matter, they were a threat.

Deep down, I knew we needed to get out of here, but my wolf wanted to play. Adrenaline spiked, sending a thrill through me.

The two wolves charged us and I raced forward, embracing the fight.

We met in a clash of fur, and teeth, and claws. The attacking wolf swiped at me, jaws snapping.

I used my claws to grab hold of him and throw him off me. I didn’t want to hurt him, but I wanted to force him to shift back to human. The problem was, my wolf was enjoying the fight and I didn’t exactly know how to control her.

My attacker moved closer and I could almost recognize Matteo’s eyes. He was in there, somewhere, under his wolf, and under the spell of the stone.

He snapped at me, nearly capturing my leg in his powerful jaws. I rolled to the side, then doubled back as I regained all fours. With a growl, I leaped on top of Matteo, forcing him to the ground.

I was on top of him, pinning him as best I could. He snapped at me, but missed. I swiped at his face, scratching his muzzle.

He bared his teeth as he rolled, knocking me off him. Hackles raised, he faced me.

Everything I’d done had little impact on him. Matteo was experienced, battle hardened. I was still learning how to use this new form. I needed my regular form to have any chance.

I didn’t want to hurt him, but I had to get away. I needed my knife, which was stashed with my pants.

Taking off at a run, I raced away from the palace, down the tree lined street, and past the other gated mansions.

I could hear Matteo giving chase. He was on my heels and he wasn’t giving in. I had to lose him.

Suddenly, I couldn’t feel him anymore. I risked a backward glance and saw the wolf running away from me.

He was charging right toward Xander and Johnny. The two wolves were locked in battle, they appeared almost equally matched. I knew Xander was holding back. He wouldn’t want to injure his friend. He was capable of more, but if he had another wolf join the fray, I wasn’t sure he could continue to hold back.

This time, I didn’t even notice the pain of the transformation. I was too worried about my mate.

Quickly, I pulled on my pants and jacket. Gripping my knife, I made my way to the trio of wolves. Jaws snapping, claws flashing, growling, and rolling, the three were doing their best to kill each other.

Picking up the pace, I found an opening and shoved the tip of my knife in Matteo’s shoulder, then removed it quickly. I wanted to force a shift, not kill or badly injure him.

I jumped out of the way as a massive paw swiped at me and sidestepped the falling body of the wolf. Xander pinned Johnny and I slid in, shoving my knife above his shoulder, careful not to hit any areas that I thought might lead to more serious injury.

As soon as I pulled out the knife, I backed away, narrowly avoiding Johnny’s teeth as he reacted to his injury.

Panting, I watched as the shifters began to transform back into human form. They were groaning and grabbing their injuries, hissing in pain. Silver stung like a mother fucker.

Xander’s wolf was by my side now, his huge shoulders rising and falling with quick breaths. I set my hand on him. “We need to get out of here.”
