Xander nodded.

“Then you need to trust the plan. If they’re as good as I hope they are, Madison will figure it out. She managed to survive as a human for five years alongside supernaturals. She’s got to have some solid skills and great instincts. We’re going to have to trust this.” Elias set his hand on Xander’s arm for a brief moment then lowered it.

“You three stay here. The kitchen is crowded enough. I’ll check on them.” I started walking before waiting for a response.

It was odd to see them agreeing on things but I wasn’t going to argue with their newfound cooperation. Maybe the time alone had been helpful for Xander and Elias. They’d battled together now more than once. That was bound to eventually help you connect, right?

I peeked into the kitchen and found all the mages seated around the table with Madison. They used all of Shelly’s chairs and the tiny infirmary-kitchen felt even more crowded than usual even though they had the same number of people taking up seats. The feeling probably had something to do with the less than pleasant expressions I was getting from the mages.

“You had the stone and lost it?” Becca said.

“I guess you got them all caught up,” I said.

“They didn’t get a fair trade for that stone,” Sam said.

“Hush, Sam. They have a mating bond. They couldn’t let her die,” Kate said.

“Thanks, Kate. I’m happy to be alive. And I’m also working to make this right. So maybe a little less hostility, okay?” I had my hands on my hips and I was definitely using my most judgy expression.

“We’ll use some protection charms on your human. As long as she’s not investigated by a high-level mage, nobody will know,” Becca said.

“Thank you,” I said.

“Not her human, though. Like I said, I have a name and everything,” Madison said.

“And she’s a trained assassin who could kick all of our asses,” I said.

“You did almost kill me,” Madison said.

I knew she meant it as a compliment in a weird way. “Thanks.”

“This has to be the most dysfunctional group I’ve ever been a part of,” Becca said.

“You sure about that?” I asked, my eyes locked on Sam.

“Enough.” Shelly stood. “Skylar out. We’ll do the spell and then Madison goes. If she misses tonight, she’ll have to wait another day.”

I nodded and left the room. My stomach twisted in nervous knots. We were really doing this. Once Madison left, there was no going back.

She’d convince the queen that she was still on her side or she wouldn’t. She’d come for me as a prisoner, or she wouldn’t.

All we could do was wait.
