“That’s too long,” I said.

“Sunrise,” I said.

“Fine,” Madison agreed. “Sunrise.”

“Now or never,” Xander said as he walked back toward us. “They say my brain is protected.”

“That was fast,” I said.

“We’re good like that,” Sam said. She placed her hand on Xander’s arm and I clenched my jaw to keep from shouting at her. She was helping us and Xander had made it clear he was mine. She wasn’t a threat even if she wanted to rile me up.

Sam dropped her hand. “Good luck.”

Xander walked over to me and swept me up in his arms, pulling me in for a toe-curling kiss. Any jealousy I’d been feeling was instantly snuffed.

I breathed him in, the scent of leather and fresh air, as my mouth and his moved in unison. It was a tender kiss, gentle and urgent at the same time. It felt too much like a farewell.

I pulled away from him, locking my eyes on his. “Don’t you dare.”

“What?” he asked.

“Don’t you dare die on me,” I said. “I won’t allow it.”

He smiled. “You won’t allow it?”

“That’s what I said.”

“I won’t die.” He kissed my forehead.

“Promise me,” I added.

“I promise,” he said.

As he walked through the door, it felt like a piece of me had been yanked away and thrown into the void. This connection with my mates was far more intense than anything I’d felt with anyone else. I knew he’d do what he could to return to me because he had to be feeling the same way.

“Sunrise,” I reminded Madison as she followed Xander out.

She nodded.

Waiting was going to be torture.
