It was probably my best way out, but shattering these would undoubtedly draw attention to my room. I looked around, hoping to find anything that might help me do this with less sound.

There was a sideboard with a decanter of brown booze, a few glasses, and even a couple of bottles of wine. I walked over to it and opened the drawers. My only tool was a corkscrew, but it was better than nothing.

Returning to the shutters, I attempted to use the corkscrew to loosen the bolts. It didn’t help.

I was going to have to risk creating noise to break these things. I did a quick glance around the room, making sure there wasn’t anything else I was missing. Aside from the bed, the only other furniture was the sideboard. There wasn’t even a bathroom in here. Damn vampires. They didn’t even need to pee.

Frustrated, I punched the shutters, hoping the quick brute force would be enough to jar something without causing too much sound.

The shutters held solid. What the fuck were these things made of?

Knock. Knock. Knock.

I tensed, then slowly turned to face the door. That was a faster response than I hoped for. Security here was as good as Madison said.

The knock came again. I stood my ground, not wanting to speak with any of Marcella’s minions.

The doorknob turned.

My wolf clawed against my chest, ready to burst free and attack. I braced myself for a fight.

Justine peeked around the door. “Do you have a minute?”

My shoulders eased. “The queen said we’d discuss our alliance tomorrow.”

The human slipped into my room and closed the door behind her. “This isn’t about any bullshit alliance that I know you clearly don’t want.”

My brow furrowed. “What are you talking about?”

“I deactivated the cameras. We have about an hour as best I can guess. There’s something you need to see,” she said.
