“There’s a good chance she’ll feel the magic, even if it doesn’t work. We’re going to be giving away any chance at surprise and it opens her up to leaving town with the stone. And Clara. We can’t risk that,” Elias said.

“How close do we have to be for this to work?” Heidi asked.

“That is an excellent question. If we need to charge in right when the spell is finished, we have to be nearby,” I said.

“We can do the spell from here, but anyone who is going to enter should be waiting for us to perform the spell,” Shelly said.

“We’ll help you prep, then we’ll head to the palace,” Elias said.

“I’m going now,” I said.

“What?” Elias and David said in unison.

“She’s got Xander and we have no idea what she’s doing to him. I can go now. Use my position as his mate to try to bargain for his life, make false promises, whatever I can. It’s another layer of distraction. If I get in, I might be able to rally the shifters she’s got under her control.” It was an insane idea, but no more insane that the other things we’d discussed.

“How long does it take to complete this spell?” David asked.

“Not long if everything goes perfectly,” Becca said.

“Can you do this?” Elias asked Shelly.

“I think we’ve got a chance,” she said.

“Time to borrow another car?” I asked.

“I’m coming with you,” Heidi said.

“No way. You stay with the mages. They’ll need someone to keep a lookout while they’re casting. If anything looks out of the ordinary, you have to warn them. They won’t know what’s happening outside their circle.” I grabbed hold of Heidi’s hand. “I know it sounds like a throwaway job, but it really is important. And I know you don’t want to be in a building with a hundred vampires.”

Heidi shivered. “I’ll stay here. Please be careful.”

I nodded at Heidi then turned to my demon mates. “Ready?”
