“Why are you telling me all this?” I asked.

“Because it’s the least I can do to atone for my sins,” she said.

“Was our time together so terrible for you, mi amore?” A cold voice asked.

“He had a right to know what he was getting into, Marcella,” Justine said. “You never gave me that chance.”

“I’ll deal with you later,” she said.

I turned to see Marcella blocking the doorway. She wasn’t in her usual ballgown. Instead, she was dressed in silk pajama pants with a button-down shirt. It looked unsettlingly normal but then again, what woman actually wears pajamas like that? Every woman I’d ever been with usually slept in my tees or nothing at all.

“Everything about this is wrong and you know it. You’re going about getting your mate back in the wrong way,” I said.

“This stopped being abouthera long time ago,” she said. “This is about our rightful place in this world.”

“Good leaders don’t lead with their emotions. You’re not making sound calls here. You know the humans will fight back. They might even destroy the whole planet before you gain it,” I said.

“I can handle them. What I can’t handle is an ally who won’t have my back.” She began to chant something in a language I didn’t understand.

When the moonstone floated in the air above me, the power radiating from it like a furnace blast, it was too late.

I tried to fight the magic, but in the end, everything went black.
