“Wow,” she says, and for the first time, she seems speechless. However, it doesn’t take long until she snaps back with her feisty attitude. “You finally said something reasonable!”

“Ha. Ha. Very funny,” I roll my eyes.

“You know what they say,” she puts her hands on her hips and gloatingly, “the best friendships are built on a solid foundation of alcohol, sarcasm, and shenanigans.”

We both burst out laughing, and I’m glad to have a friend like Lilac. I could never imagine my life without her in it, and I’ll always be thankful for the relationship we have.

“But jokes aside, what are you planning to do?” Lilac asks, this time, all serious. “Hang out with two brothers?”

“They’re not brothers!” I strongly protest, but my determination fades away as I realize, in some way, they are. “They’re just… cousins.”Why do words said out loud feel so much more real?

“And best friends,” Lilac adds, overseeing me, and I let out a breath.

“No need to remind me, Li. I know.”

“So? What are you planning to do?”

“I… don’t want to play them if that’s what you think.” I cross my arms, frowning.

“That’s not what I was thinking, at all. Well, until now.”

I sigh, “Okay. I’ll tell you the truth.”

“I’m listening.”

“I thought, maybe if I don’t vibe with Oliver, he’d agree to cover up for Damien and me.” I bite my lip nervously, ashamed to look her into the eyes. “I know it sounds stupid.”

“Well… for sure, it sounds dangerous.” Lilac squeezes my arm gently while giving me a reassuring smile. “But that’s what you wanted, right? A rush?”

“I guess…,” I say quietly, not sure if I’ll handle what I’m about to get myself into.

“I don’t believe I’m going to say this, but…,” Lilac stops as if contemplating her words, “Just be careful, Ava. Let’s not have them both fall for you. And, most importantly, do not let yourself fall for both of them.”

I hardly swallow.

Damien

“What’s up, cuz?” Oliver’s giddy voice grabs my attention as he approaches me from the opposite side of the campus with a broad grin on his face.

“Nothing much,” I reply, taking another drag of my cigarette. “Waiting for this damn day to end.”

“A tough day, huh?”

“More like a tough night,” I roll my eyes, puffing the smoke before pinching the cherry off the cigarette and throwing it into the bin behind me. “Black Widow had some special tasks for me, and it kept me up the whole night. I’m falling asleep on my feet.”

“It’s quite a challenge to be an heir to someone as demanding as her,” Oliver says, and I’m not sure if he feels for me, or rather is just being an ass like he always is. But I’m too tired to play those games today.

“Tell me about it.” The cliché phrase should do. “So? What’s with your face?” I’m not in the mood to talk, but the shit-eating grin won’t disappear.

“What about it?” He plays dumb.

I roll my eyes. I guess we’re doing this after all. “What? Did you get laid last night?”

“Better.” The grin gets even wider.

I’m annoyed by all of these silly games but am too tired to even argue. Just fucking say what you’ve gotta say, dude. We’re not in kindergarten. “What?”

“I’m taking blondie out this evening,” he brags, proud as a fucking peacock. Oliver sticks his chest out and tilts his head to the side, acting like the Alpha Male that he is not. “I bet you didn’t expect that turn of events. So, it looks like your date didn’t go so well after all.”
