Damien

Ipull up to my house only to see Viper sitting in her murdered-out Camaro. “What now, Viper?”

“She wants to see you,” she says.

“What else is new?” I roll my eyes, and she doesn’t respond. Instead, she starts the car engine, expecting me to get in. I look at her pouty lips in a near-black shade and wonder why she likes to paint them like that? Does she want to look more dangerous? I scan her face and notice a scar above her right black eyebrow. How come I’ve never seen that before? It doesn’t look like it’s new. She wears silver nose bridge studs and is dressed up all in black. Black leather jeans with studded leather, a black belt, a black fishnet top showing off her skull and roses tattoos on her arm, and leather spiked boots the same shade of black. Her skin is a cool espresso tone, and her dark dreadlocks fall just below her shoulders. I wonder if Black Widow makes all her people wear black? I usually choose black clothes myself. I’ve never even paid attention to that. Even my hair is naturally a deep black. Now, I wonder… maybe it’s our color? After all, we’reBlack Venom.

“Scorpion?” She tilts her head to the side, watching me, somewhat annoyed, somewhat concerned. “Are you okay?”

“All good,” I state before I hop in her car.

As I sit there as she weaves in and out of traffic, my mind drifts to Ava and Oliver kissing at the bar. I really put my foot into it this time. I didn’t need to bring Penelope. For one, she is annoying and doesn’t respect boundaries. But the real issue is how Ava responded. It wasn’t a competition that night. She wanted me, and I wanted her, but I ended up pushing her into my cousin’s arms.Real nice, asshole.

“Thank you for coming, Scorpion,” Black Widow says sourly. “You know I don’t like wasting my time, so I’ll get straight to the point.” I nod, and she continues. “I heard your target is more attracted to your cousin.”Shit.

“Guess word really does get around,” I answer as she’s eyeing me with a displeased look.

“I don’t need her falling for Oliver,” she continues, not paying attention to my remark like in a mantra. “I need her to fall for you.”

“I have that under control.”

“Oh, do you?” She frowns. “Because it doesn’t look like that.”

“I don’t need your reprimands,” I say sternly. “I understand my assignment.”

“Good. Because I’ve received a letter that they issued a court date,” she pauses, building up the tension. “In a month.”A month?“I don’t need to remind you that you have to seduce the girl before the trial, I suppose?”

“You don’t,” I say, unfazed. “Have I ever failed you?”

“No,” she admits, smiling slyly.

“Then consider it done,” I remain a stone-cold face and turn on my heel. I’m ready to leave this devil’s office. I feel like I’m suffocating every damn time that I’m here. I don’t spend any more time around this woman than it is necessary. Our meetings are never a pleasure. I only tolerate her because she’s my boss and a part of my life.Family. And you don’t get to choose your family, right?

I can’t sleep when Black Widow’s voice keeps ringing in my ears. ‘Seduce the damn girl,Damien! You have a month.’. I’m staring at the ceiling lit by the moonlight sneaking up through the window, trying to figure out what the hell am I supposed to do. Take Ava on a job with me, record the fucking video and use it to blackmail her father. That was the plan. And I know I should stick to it, but… if only it was as easy as it sounds. I’ve never had issues with any task before. Then what has changed, you’d ask? Well… I’m fucked. I’m fucked because I didn’t assume I wouldn’t want to go through with this. I’m battling between what’s right for me, Black Venom or Ava. In some fucked up incomprehensible way, this tiny little woman has awoken something inside me. Something that I thought had been dead for a long time. What now? Am I going to be her goddamn savior? I sigh, getting up out of bed and heading to the balcony to light a cigarette.

“Like hell I am,” I mumble to myself, surrounded only by the darkness of the night. “I’m your damnation, Avalyne DeLuca.” Exhaling the smoke, I close my eyes, and I keep repeating the sentence over and over again, hoping if I say it enough times, it will become real.

“I’m your damnation….” A deep breath escapes my lungs.Fuck, who am I kidding?

Feeling like crap, I arrive at the campus. As if last night wasn’t hard enough, the first thing I see after passing the main entrance is Oliver and Ava. Chatting, laughing, exchanging flirty gazes.A fucking lovely start to the day!

I pretend I don’t see the two as I walk past them. But I do. I fucking see the kiss he steals from her at a goodbye before she heads to her locker. And I feel it.Jealousy. For the first time in three years.

“Sup, Cuz?” Ollie’s voice catches me mid-way through the hallway.Shit!I was hoping he would let this pass, but of course, he hasn’t. He would never miss a chance to throw his triumph in my face.

“Ollie,” I say, turning to face him, imposing I don’t give a damn about his little encounter with Ava. “Sup, bro?”

“It looks like you’re losing the bet, Cuz!” He exclaims, overly peppy. And here we go again.

“What makes you think so?” I ask, poker-faced.

“Don’t play the fool,” he mocks like he’s five. “I know you saw Ava and me.”

“So?” I tilt my head to the side, watching him piercingly. You know the best way to beat your enemy? Remain calm and composed. Even when you’re losing the ground under your feet, you have to stay calm. Do not show you’re scared. Nor threatened.

“So?” The lack of my reaction takes him off guard. “I’ve spent the last few days hanging out with her.” He tries to keep his game on, but I know it far too well. And I’m not easy to break, unlike him.

“Again. So?” I sigh as if annoyed.
