“I’ll go wash my hands,” Oliver whispers into my ear, and I’m pretty sure my cheeks flushed the deepest shade of red. He slides away from under the blanket and heads toward the bathroom.

“I need some water,” I say as I stand. I can only compare my legs to those of a baby deer standing for the first time. Shaky and just plain sloppy.

I turn and face Damien. “Does anyone want anything?”

Damien smirks provocatively but says nothing. His eyes follow down my body, his gaze lingering against my skin. And with that, I feel like my body is burning.

I clear my throat and collectively walk past Penelope, who is sucked into the movie and completely oblivious.

Damien

“Off limits,” I hear Ava say as her head is buried in the fridge.

“Am I now?” I back her up until she is against the counter, surrounding her with my arms. Her eyes flicker between mine with confusion and a trace of pure lust.

“Seeing you come was hot, Firefly,” I lean in, whispering to her, and she hardly swallows. “Except, I wish it were me you would let me touch you like that. If those were my hands, there would be no chance you would have been able to keep quiet.” I run my fingers down her bare arm, feeling the goosebumps rise on her skin. “You would have been begging for me to take you.”

Sure as hell, I was jealous a few minutes ago. Seeing another man touch her, seeinghimtouch her like that, made my blood boil. I had to harness every bit of my willpower not to punch him in the face and steal Ava away from him. But I knew it wasn’t an option. That’s not how I am. I’m not supposed to get jealous. I’m not supposed to havefeelings. I’m expected to deal with things with stoic calm. But when I saw it was not Oliver’s touch that turned her on but my gaze, I understoodshe’s mine. He may touch her however he wants; she’ll always keep craving me.

I am who she desires.

“You egotistical bastard!” She yells in a whisper, narrowing her eyes at me.

“How is it egotistical?” I ask with a straight face. “Hell, Ava. I would have been begging to takeyou.”

She swallows hard like she has been awakened to my feelings for her. I back away. Of course, I back away. She and I are a really fucking bad idea. Running my hands through my hair, I mumble, “Damnit.”

Without hesitation, I trap her between my arms again, but this time I nuzzle my face into her neck, breathing her sweet smell of coconut and mango. She exposes more of her neck to me, allowing me to drag my lips down to her collarbone.

“Damien…,” she whispers. “I want you.”

I close my eyes, letting myself indulge in the sound of her sweet voice that nearly breaks as she whispers my name. Inhaling the addictive scent of her skin, I realize she has me under her spell. Fuck, the effect this woman has on me. Avalyne DeLuca, the woman who is supposed to be my target to get away with the court trial, has me wrapped around her little finger. And that thought… it scares the crap out of me. I’ve loved once in my life, and let me tell you, it didn’t end well. I back away and look at her.Again. She gives me a confused look. God, she’s so fucking beautiful. We stand there and stare at each other for a while.

“Damien…,” she says hesitantly. “Is something wrong?”

I know she looks at me, trying to figure me out. And I’m fighting between my thoughts again. I want to tell her the truth. About the bet, about me. But I can’t. Words won’t come out of my mouth. And when she takes a step, reaching her hand to me, I walk away. I fucking walk away from the woman that could be the only person in the world able to destroy the walls I’ve built around myself. The only person able to repair the damage to my soul.

“Damien, wait!” I hear her call after me as I leave, but I don’t turn back. Am I running away? No. In my own way, I’m protecting her.

I hurry out of Ollie’s place and hop on my bike. I start the engine, and its thrumming sound is the only thing that can jam the thought running through my mind. I left her there. Fucking idiot. I left her there with him. He doesn’t deserve her either. Neither of us do. As impossible as it sounds, Oliver is even more wicked than me. Fuck it! I shake my head, sigh, and hop off the motorcycle.I’m going back for her.

“Damien?!” I look at the entrance, and there she is. “What the fuck?!” She screams at me with so much rage it’s unlike her. Usually, she’s sarcastic and feisty but always keeps her composure. But now, it seems like she’s lost it. I hurry up toward her, slide my hands around her waist, and pull her body closer to mine. She gives me the most confused look I’ve ever seen.

“Fuck it, Ava,” I whisper, looking deeply into her bewildered eyes. “Come with me. Please.”

“What? Where?” She asks softly. I can tell she’s puzzled as hell, but she trusts me. She fucking trusts me. It’s written all over her face.

“Just come with me.” I grab her hand and lead her toward my bike.

“What about Penelope? Oliver?”

“Screw them. Screw all of them, Firefly.” I say, handing her the helmet.

She looks at me hesitantly for a short moment before she nods, smiling softly, “Okay.”

And this is all I need.‘Okay.’I help her hop on the bike, and we drive away, leaving just the fading roar of the motor engine behind us.
