Avalyne

Iwake up to birds singing outside and the rays of sun sweeping through the window. Last night was strange. The moment I had with Oliver, then the things Damien admitted to me. It all feels like a dream. I stretch myself, still yawning, when my phone buzzes off, and for some reason, I get anxious. Is it Damien? Or Oliver? Or maybe it’s just Lilac wanting the juicy gossip from yesterday, as she calls it?

I search for my phone, but it’s nowhere to be found. I can hear it vibrating but can’t spot it.Where the hell did I leave it?I think I was in such a haze after the ‘kidnapping’ to the boat that I completely forgot about the world. It buzzes again, and I turn to the chair across the room where I threw the clothes I was wearing yesterday. It’s there, hidden in the pocket of my skirt. I quickly reach for it, and my blood runs cold.

Shit! I completely forgot about Oliver!

I scroll through a dozen unread messages and missed calls from him. He must be fuming that I disappeared like that. The worst part of it is, I really don’t care. I see a text from Damien, and nothing else matters anymore. Bias? Perhaps. As they say, ‘the heart wants what it wants,’ and my heart... desires Damien.

Without thinking twice, I open the message.

Damien:

Firefly… I hope I didn’t cross

any boundaries last night

Me:

Nothing I didn’t want…

I type the reply faster than I think. Last night, the time we spent on the boat was special to me. And I don’t want Damien to think differently.

I put the phone on my nightstand and dig myself out of bed. It’s 7:15, and I know it’s time to get ready for class. If I don’t leave soon, I’m going to be late. And that’s something I don’t do.

“Ava!” Lilac’s prominent voice reaches my ear, and I turn to face her. She’s wearing a see-through, long-sleeve black shirt with beautifully contrasting flower print, matching amaranth shorts on the sheer dark tights, flower patch sneakers, a long double-chained leather necklace with emerald stones, and a black feather on the bottom.

“Hey, Li–” She grabs me by my arm, cuts me off mid-greeting, and pulls me to the corner of the East Palm hallway.

“So? How did it go yesterday?” She watches me impatiently, waiting for all the spicy details.Oh, if you only knew.

“I’m happy to see you, too, dear friend,” I say sarcastically.

“Oh, cut the crap, Ava.” She sighs. “I’ve been dying to know if you finally got laid?”Sweet.

I roll my eyes and walk past her, heading to my locker. But it seems like she’s not dropping the topic. She chases after me, sneaks up in between my locker and me, and crosses her arms, stomping her feet.

“What?!” I can’t help but laugh.

“What do you mean what?” She smiles. “Who won your heart yesterday? The dark, mysterious alpha male or his chivalrous sexy cousin?” She says teasingly while playing with her hair.

“You’re crazy. I swear.” I joke, sliding the books inside the locker.

She pushes her hair like a model in the spotlight, “No. I’m extraordinary.”

“On that, we agree.” We both chuckle when suddenly my heart skips a beat.

“Hey, Ava.” I hear Oliver’s icy voice booming from behind and when I turn to face him, his stone-cold gaze sends chills down my body.

“Oh, so the chivalrous cousin won,” Lilac mutters while she looks Oliver up and down with what seems like discontent.Sadly, this timeyou assumed wrong, friend. And I’m screwed!

“What?” Oliver asks, narrowing his eyes at Lilac, and I give her a ‘what the hell’ kind of look.

“Nothing!” She exclaims before heading off to class. “See ya later, alligator!”Thanks, Li!As if the situation isn’t awkward enough already.

“So where did you disappear to last night?” He forces a smile, but he can’t hide the anger building up in him. His eyes narrow as he refuses to blink. Why is he not blinking?“You haven’t answered my calls, texts… You had me worried.”

“I’m sorry, Ollie. I–” I hesitate, thinking of an excuse, but he cuts me off.
