Oliver’s full attention is now on his friend. Or whoever the girl is. They keep talking and laughing and are so consumed by each other’s presence that they forget about the world around them. Should I be jealous that Oliver’s focus shifted from me to that girl? That he doesn’t introduce me to his friend? Probably. But my focus is on Damien and how he has zoned in on me. I feel his gaze following all the places I imagine him to touch, explore, devour. It’s like he’s in my mind, reading the sinful thoughts my head is full of, with him in the leading role. Does he feel it too? Does he feel the undeniable attraction pulling us to each other like magnets? Or is it just me?Let’s find out.

I take a few steps toward Damien and lean into him, “Stunning?” I say in a seductively low voice. “What’s so stunning, Mr. Alarie?”

“You look stunning,” he moistens his lower lip again, causing a tingling sensation between my thighs.

“You look…hot,” I say, trying to tame the wild desire that his stare alone ignites to its limits. “Really pulling that cliché bad boy look.”

He leans into me and reaches around me, resting his hand on the small of my back before whispering, “There’s nothing cliché about me, gorgeous.” I hardly swallow, inhaling the scent of his addictive cologne. “Nothing good about me either. What you see is what you get.” He steps back just a little to look into my eyes, smirking provocatively.

“Right,” I say sarcastically. “You’re probably delicate like a little pink flower.” I giggle, draping his chest with my nails, and his muscles tense. I look into his hungry eyes that, with each passing second, fill with more lust and desire I have ever witnessed. I sink my teeth into my bottom lip, slowly, temptingly, and he clenches his jaw like he’s trying to resist me. “What’s the matter, Mr. Alarie? Are you scared?”I know this isn’t one-sided.The way Damien is fighting his temptation to kiss me as if scared to unleash the beast slumbering inside of him, gives me the confirmation I was seeking. Absolutely satisfying.

“I am,” he hisses, breathing heavily, and I’m surprised he admitted that. “After all, I’m not the man you came here with.” And his words put out the fire in me like cold heavy rain as I realize Oliver has disappeared.

Damien

Dumbass. Who leaves their date alone at one of these parties?I watch Firefly as she looks around, searching for her date, and as she realizes she’s been dumped, her eyes fill with gloominess.

“What the hell?” She shouts, frowning. “Where is he?” She stands on her toes to search across the room, and I can’t help but smile. She looks so innocent.Lost. She looks like she needs protection, and for some fucked up reason, I’m the one who wants to give her that.

“Stick with me, Firefly,” I whisper against her ear. “I won’t let anything happen to you.”

She looks at me hesitantly for a short while before she nods, “Thank you.”

I smile, “Another whiskey?”

“Why the hell not,” she says, and her eyes brighten up before she turns on her heels and sits on the stool at the bar. “Are you coming or what?” She looks from behind her arm, smirking. Fuck. She’s so gorgeous. I can’t get the dirty thoughts out of my mind. I’d rather take her upstairs and fuck her so hard every one hears her screaming. But not tonight. Tonight, I turn into her knight in shining armor—her savior.

An hour goes by, and we still haven’t heard from that dick, aka my cousin. I’m trying to keep Firefly entertained, and I must admit, she’s fun as hell. We’ve been making superficial bets on the stories about couples throughout the party, and every time she wins, she jumps like a kid who just got a candy. It’s so refreshing to watch. For a moment, I even forget who I am. I forget about my dark past and why I got to know Avalyne in the first place. It’s how she smiles in the most genuine way I’ve ever seen. The way her eyes glimmer with happiness for such a silly reason as making up a funny story about people we haven’t met before. Or the way my name rolls off her tongue that sends shivers through my body. For a moment, just a short one, it feels like I’m capable of loving again. The fucked up part is that the woman I have been sent to seduce, use for my own benefit, betray, is the one to make me feel alive again. The woman who’s my forbidden fruit which I should’ve never plucked. Life is such a hypocritical bitch.

“This is so much fun!” She says after expressing a loud laugh.

“I’m not a dull man, contrary to what you may believe.” I wink at her.

“I never said you were dull.” She turns to face me, bringing her face inches from mine. Our eyes lock, and it feels like the world around us stands still.

“Avalyne…,” I whisper, staring deeply into her big, shiny ocean blue eyes.

“There you are!” I sigh, turning to my dumbass of a cousin who has finally reminded himself of his date. “I’ve been looking all over for you, Ava.” He says as if totally oblivious of his doings.Someone needs to hold me back, or I’m fucking punching this jackass.

“You disappeared–” Ava says, confused, but the dick doesn’t even pay attention to her cry for his attention.

He interrupts her mid-sentence, “Shit!” He checks his pockets. “My phone. I left it. Give me a minute.”

Ava’s jaw drops to the ground as she watches Oliver disappearing into the crowd again. She exhales a frustrated breath and walks toward the bar, leaving me behind. I don’t mind. In fact, I admire how she handles that.

“Oh my God! Damien Alarie!” I hear a high-pitched voice followed by an arm squeeze. I turn to see Brooke, my old friend with benefits. “Well, well. Haven’t seen you in ages!”

“Won’t you introduce me to your sexy friend?” A chocolate-haired girl taps Brooke on her back before biting her lip obnoxiously while reaching her hand to me.

“Damien, this is Cassidy. Cassidy, this is Damien.” Brooke makes the introductions, and I shake Cassidy’s hand.

“Damien Alarie.”

“No way!” She exclaims way too enthusiastically. Her voice rings in my ears so loud it hurts. “TheDamien Alarie?”

“Mhmm,” Brooke purrs like a cat, nodding. Suddenly, I see the reflection of all the wild nights we’ve had glistening in her emerald eyes. She smirks seductively, playing with her dark blonde hair.

“I’ve heard so much about you, Damien.” The other chick licks her lips while staring at me with hungry, lustful, dark brown eyes. She arches her back, and my gaze drops to her well-endowed bust. Don’t judge me. I’m just a man, after all.
