Avalyne

I’m riding a motorcycle with my hands wrapped around Damien’s waist. The chilly air sweeps across my neck, my hair dancing in the wind. I recall our texts from earlier, and I smile. He didn’t ask questions. He just came as if I was his queen, whose command he obediently follows.

Damien takes a rough turn, and a moment later, we’re on a dark, secluded beach that showcases the stars. I hop off the bike and take a few steps back. Damien takes off his helmet, revealing his gorgeous face to me, and gives me a confused look.

“What is it, Ava?”Ava.He rarely calls me by my name. He must sense it’s serious. I let out a frustrated breath. How come this man knows me so well while I don’t know him at all? “Firefly, what is it?” He moves closer to me, but I back off.

I look up, straight into his befuddled eyes, and say coldly, “Are you involved with the mafia, Damien?”

His face goes pale. His eyes grow wide in shock, and his mouth opens and shuts as if he wants to say something but doesn’t know what. I stare into his eyes for what feels like an eternity before he shakes his head, regaining the ability to speak.

“Yes, I am.” He says calmly as if it is nothing.Damien Alarie, the man I have fallen in love with, is a mafia prince.

A cold shiver runs through my body, and I clear my throat but don’t say anything. I look to the side, avoiding his shrilling gaze, avoiding the next question. I’m scared the answer is exactly what I don’t want to hear.

“I am chosen to be the heir to Black Venom if you’ve ever heard of it.” He continues, and my jaw drops to the ground.Black Venom?I heard they’re the most dangerous mafia in the United States, with associations worldwide. I hardly swallow. I’m looking into the eyes of one of the most dangerous men in the world. The thought is a little frightening.

But suddenly, the fear replaces sheer rage, and I combat, “Why didn’t you tell me, Damien?! Didn’t you think that might be rather important?” I say sarcastically, “Oh, wait! Don’t answer. I know.” I scoff, “Because I’m the daughter of the Prosecutor involved in the case against you, right?!”

His eyes widen, and he shakes his head no. But his eyes give him away. They scream‘busted,’and it tears my soul apart.

Damien

Shit!

Hearing Avalyne’s words, my blood runs cold. I didn’t expect her to find it out. Not so soon. Not now. Not ever. It all was supposed to be just a task. No strings attached. Then why do I feel so fucking bad now? I look at Ava, and I have a weird lump in my throat. She seems so broken, and for some fucked up reason, it breaksme.

“For fuck’s sake, say something!” She shouts at me with tears in her eyes and her voice breaking.

“That’s not true, Avalyne.”Lie.“I don’t care whose daughter you are.”Another lie.

I look straight into her eyes and lie. That’s who I am. A fucking lying bastard with no feelings. I take a few steps closer to her, grab her hand and cup it in mine.

“I haven’t told you because I was afraid it would scare you away,” I say softly, gazing deeply into her big, luminous ocean blue eyes, and I feel something weird. Pain. It fucking hurts me to lie to her. Except… I’m not so sure those are lies anymore.

“I’m listening,” she says coldly, stepping back and crossing her arms in front of her.

I look to the ground, rubbing my temples before I sigh, “The mafia isn’t something you talk about on a walk in the park.” Our eyes lock. “How was I supposed to do that? Approach you and say, ‘hey, I’m Damien Alarie, the heir to the most dangerous mafia in our country. Wanna hang out?’ I try to stay calm, even though I’m anything but calm. I’m mad. Mad at myself that I can’t accomplish a simple task like that. And scared. Fucking scared shitless that I’ll lose her.

She lets out a soft sigh and looks away, puzzled. I move closer to her, and this time, she doesn’t back off. I gently grab her chin with my fingers and turn her to face me. I look deeply into her shiny eyes before tucking a strand of her hair behind her ear.

“I’m not going to lie,” I say softly, with my eyes flickering between hers. “And I’m not going to pretend to be someone I am not.”

She frowns slightly and whispers, “What do you mean?”

“I’m a dangerous man,” I state the obvious. It’s weird, but it feels good, to be honest with her. I no longer have to lie. At least, for now. “If you choose to stay away, I will respect your decision.” I stare at her, and for the first time, I can’t read her. I don’t know what she is thinking or what she will do. I know it will be better for both of us if she chooses to stay away from me. It’ll solve everything. I’ll no longer have to follow Black Widow’s wicked plan. But at the same time, the thought of losing her drives me insane. It’s like I can’t imagine my life without Avalyne DeLuca in it. It’s so fucked up because she’s not supposed to be in my life.

“Hey?” I tilt her chin up, and she casts her gaze upward. “Since we’re here, being honest to each other, why don’t we show our true selves?” I whisper, amazed at myself. Where is this coming from? I should leave this girl alone. Run away from her before I turn her life into hell. But I can’t. I can’t combat the strong attraction toward her. She’s like a magnet I’m unable to repel. “No secrets. No lies.”

“Damien…,” she whispers hesitantly. Her eyes fall to her feet and takes a deep inhale. “Okay.” She lets out a quiet sigh, and I smile, stroking her cheek with my thumb.

“So, how about a confession?” She asks looking up at me, and suddenly I can see a tiny spark in her eyes.

“Confession?” I frown, smiling.

“Yes. I want to know what the trial against you is about?” She says, determined. “I won’t accept vague answers like last time.”

“Okay.” I nod. I promised her no lies, so all she gets is a bare truth, even if it scares her away. “Just please… don’t freak out.”
