Damien

Mallory Doyle. The bane of my existence. Yes, there was a time when she was cool, but that all came to a halt when she fucked over Black Venom.

“What are you doing here, Mallory?” I ask politely.

“You aren’t going to introduce me to your little friend?” She sneers.

I’m watching her look Ava up and down. I know that look. I know her look.

I glance over at Ava. “Wait for me in the café.”

Ava gives me a baffled look, and rightfully so. This random woman comes up and kills the whole vibe we had going. But, at all costs, I have to protect Firefly.

“Sure. Uhmm…,” Ava looks at Mallory and says, “Nice to meet you.”So innocent.

“Don’t play coy with me, little girl. We haven’t even introduced ourselves. But no need, I’m sure.” What is she doing? “Damien will be done with you in a month.”

Ava stands strong. She continues to impress me. Turning her head, she looks at me and grabs her bag. “Good luck,” she says, gesturing towards Mallory.I’m going to need it.

I watch as Ava rounds the corner, bringing my attention back to Mallory. “I’m going to ask this one more time. What are you doing here, Mallory?”

She smiles. “I missed you, baby, and I want you back.”

“That will never happen.”

“Oh, come on,” she begs, draping her arms over my shoulders. “Don’t make me beg. But, I know how much you like that.”

Her touch reminds me of something, like a fly landing on your food. You won’t kill the fly, but you definitely aren’t going to eat the rest of your food. I grab her by her wrists and move her hands away from me.

“Baby, we were so good together. I’m sorry I left in the first place,” she whines.

I walk away. I feel the tension in my fists. How long have I been clenching like this? The tension in my jaw is giving me a headache. I can’t do this right now. I need to find Ava.

“Over here, Damien!” She shouts from a corner table in the café. One look, one smile from this woman, relaxes every muscle in my body.

I sit in the chair across from her, wanting to see her face. Her stunning face.

“Who was that girl?” She asks immediately.

“Ava…,” I take her hands across the table. “I want to answer you, and I will. Not here, though.” A look of disappointment takes a home on her face.

“Want to play hooky with me?” Ava looks at our hands and up at me. Then she looks back at her hands as her thumbs start rubbing over my knuckles.

“Okay.”

“Okay. Let’s go!” I drag her away from the table after throwing down a couple of bills to cover her coffee.

We have to cross campus to get to my bike. I feel the stares of everyone. I hear the whispers.

‘They’re holding hands.’

‘Maybe she is his hostage.’

‘I heard her father disowned her.’

Those are just some of them. But I don’t give a flying fuck. That’s what people do, after all, no? They assume stuff about others. They gossip. For some, gossip is the most exciting part of their day, so I just let them enjoy those about me. And since I’m the‘bad boy’who rides a motorcycle, wears a leather jacket, skips school randomly, they just assume I’m dangerous. The truth is, they don’t have a clue about who I really am. I haven’t chosen this life for myself. I was born in this swamp with no option to ever leave. I know my destiny from the start. And even if I don’t like the course of my life, I have to follow the rules. It got even harder after my brother’s death. I’ve become the next heir after he passed away. Not that my so-called peers would take a moment to understand me, or any other kid, but that doesn’t matter. What stuns me is the one sight I least expected to see– Oliver and Mallory whispering under a tall oak tree. I stop for a brief moment, which causes Ava to bump into me. Oliver looks at me with an all-knowing smile.

My eye twitches after I realize the betrayal of my own family.
