“Moving on,” I insist, placing my hand on the small of Ava’s back, leading her to my bike just a few feet away.

She takes the helmet off the handle like it’s second nature. Watching her long blonde hair hanging out from the bottom is the most beautiful sight. This woman is the piece I’ve been missing.

Avalayne

I’m finally home after a long day at the beach with Damien. We laughed and splashed, looked for shells, and he even tried to teach me to surf. He spoke of his childhood, and I talked about mine. The more he opens up, the more I fall for him. I know he feels it too.

My phone vibrates on my nightstand.A text from Damien.A smile forms on my face.

Damien:

How’s my favorite girl doing?

Me:

I don’t know how she is,

but I’m doing well ;)

“He’s calling,” I say out loud.

“It seems you have me wrapped around your little finger, Avalyne DeLuca,” he admits in a low tone.

Talking to him on the phone isn’t really something we’ve done before. But it’s like I can feel him here with me. “What do you plan on doing about this problem of yours, Mr. Alarie?”

I can’t help but smile.

“At this point, there really isn’t anything we can do about it except ride the wave.”

Is he confessing his feelings for me? “Damien. I thought you didn’tdofeelings.”

He laughs and says, “I thought so too, Firefly. Enough about me. What are you doing tonight?”

“Nothing really. Just reading.”

“Would you like to come out with me? There’s this great band playing at the rooftop bar.”

“Damien,” I exhale. “As much as I would love to go with you, my father would dice me up and serve me for dinner.”

Damien clutches his chest dramatically. “Ouch. I’m offended!” He laughs for a few seconds, totally intrigued by my sense of humor and fear. Finally catching his breath, he says, “I already talked to Lilac. She’s going to cover for you.”

The thought of going on an actual date causes adrenaline to flood within me. “Okay. I can’t say no to the man who gets my adrenaline pumping.”

“So, I’m your adrenaline rush?”

“Perhaps. Let me know when you’re outside.”

“It’s a date, baby,” he whispers, and I picture him smiling against the phone.

We eventually hang up, and I find myself giddy and unable to control my giggles.

A bit later, Lilac is in my room helping me get ready. “Girl, you need to go shopping. I feel like you dress like the cast of Clueless.”

This coming from an eclectic woman herself, I can’t help but roll my eyes. “And you dress like you live on a space station from the future.” I reach out to touch the fabric on the skirt. “Lilac, is this reflector fabric?”

“Yes. It’s off-white in the daylight, and in the night, you can see me coming at you like a solar flare,” she barks, proudly spinning around.

“Okay…but what am I going to wear on this date?!”
