Damien

Imove in to kiss Ava’s beautiful pink lips until I hear a familiar voice.

“You asshole!” We both snap our necks to find Penelope.

“Damien, what’s happening right now?” Ava asks, almost whispering.

Penelope snaps back, “I’ll tell you, Malibu Barbie…”

Ava stands up from her stool in front of Penny, bearing her tiny stature. Her eyebrow cocks like she is about to throw a punch. Penny doesn’t budge. I knew she wouldn’t. She lives for this drama.

“You should leave, Penny,” I calmly say as I pull Ava into the crook of my arm.

Penny’s look could kill. She balls a fist and yells, “Shut up, Damien!” Before she can wind up to throw a punch, I grab her wrist to stop her.

“You don’t want to cause a scene with me,” I threaten. Despite her ignorance of actually knowing what I do and who I’m involved with, she knows what I’m capable of. Ava is a little confused by the whole commotion as I stand still like a statue gazing coldly at Penelope.

Her jaw is clenching while she flicks her eyes between Ava and me. I need to get her out of here.

“Okay! Fine! But if you think you’re special to him, you’re wrong!” Penelope fires. “He’ll use you and then throw you away like you’re useless trash. Like he did with every girl before you, and he’ll do with every girl after you!”

Without saying another word, she turns and saunters away. She was always a ticking time bomb, but who would have thought she would air our dirty laundry in public? Who the fuck am I kidding? She loves that shit. She probably walked away smiling.

“I’m sorry, Ava…,” I start, but I have no excuse for Penny’s behavior.

“Damien, it’s okay. Whatever the reason she has to be angry, she shouldn’t have done that in public,” Ava says empathetically. “But tell me, what’s going on between you two?”

“Nothing. We were just… friends.”

She sits there chewing on her lip, narrowing her eyes, fiddling with the hem of her shirt.

“Friends with benefits?”

“Yeah. We discussed the boundaries, but it seems as though those have gotten blurred.”

Ava rubs her temples, her eyes wide, taking a deep breath. “I can’t judge you. I was dating you and your cousin at one point, right,” she says, unsure if it’s a statement or a question.

“You have got to be fucking kidding me right now!”

“What now, Damien?” She asks, sounding unwilling to take on any more drama tonight. Behind her, Oliver and Mallory are linked arm in arm, making a beeline to the bar. Her eyes follow my angry gaze. “You’re shitting me,” she whispers under her breath.

“Great. Let the fuckening begin.”

Avalyne

Oliver slides up next to Damien with a cocky grin. “What’s up, bro?” he asks Damien and smiles at me with ice in his eyes.

“So, Damien. Maybe this time you’ll introduce us to each other properly. I’m dying to know who your friend is,” Mallory says.

She is stunning. Her chocolate hair is blown out, falling down her olive-tone chest, covering the straps of her deep V-neck dress. Her make-up, perfect. I am nothing compared to this woman. My skin is tan and clear, but throw on mascara and gloss and call it a look. I know my worth, but I have this aching inside me that feels like Damien definitely traded down.

“Avalyne, this is Mallory. Mallory, Avalyne,” Damien says, rolling his eyes, appeasing her.

Mallory looks at me, gives me a half-assed smile, and then looks back at Damien. “Quite the introduction, babe.”

“Don’t fucking call me that,” Damien snarls.

“Chill, bro. It’s all fun and games, right?” Oliver says to Damien, giving him a look. Mallory laughs.
