I exhale deeply. Fuck! It sounds ridiculous and cliché, but that’s exactly how it was.

“Yes, Ava. I know how it sounds, but this is the truth.”

“Likely story, Damien,” she scoffs and rolls her eyes before looking away as if avoiding my gaze.

“Can’t you see it was their idea all along?” I say, slightly annoyed. It’s hard to compose yourself knowing the trust of the only person you truly care about is at stake. “Oliver brought her here on purpose.”

“And why would he do that?” She tilts her head to the side, looking into my eyes again.

“Because…,”He’s just a twisted asshole who wants to win the bet.But of course, I can’t tell her that. Not now. Not yet. She wouldn’t forgive me for it now, and I can’t lose her.

“You have nothing to say, huh?” She says assumingly, irritatingly nodding her head. “You know what, Damien? Fuck you.”

“No, Ava–”

“Oliver?” She calls out for Oliver, who’s on his way toward her, the second he hears his name.Pathetic.

“Ava, I swear she kissed me, and I–” I grab her by her arm, preventing her from leaving.

“That’s what they always say.” She gives me a spiteful look before yanking out her arm. “Save it.”

“Let’s go, Ava. Let’s get you home.” Oliver slides his hand around her waist, and I lose it.

I run to her and yet again, take a hold of her arm, turning her to face me. I look at her confused face before setting my eyes on hers. Hoping she’ll notice it’s breaking me as much as it’s breaking her.

“Please don’t leave before you hear me out,” I whisper. “Do you really think I wanted this to happen? She fucking broke me, Ava.” I let go of her arm, taking a deep breath and cupping my face in my hands. I’m boiling inside.

“Ava, hurry up.” Oliver wants to grab her hand, but she doesn’t let him. She watches me shaking my head, angrily biting my bottom lip before I look her in the eyes.

“I would never do something like this to you, Ava.” I hiss. “You know why?”

She stares at me, astonished, her eyes flicker between mine. “No…,” she says quietly.

“Because you’re the only woman in my life that makes me feel like I can be myself again,” I say, clenching my palms into fists, my voice breaking. “You’re the only good thing that has happened to me lately, and I wouldn’t screw this for something as fucked up and superficial as I had with Mallory.” I let out a heavy, shaky breath. I’m sure all the pain I feel is all over my face, but I’m not ashamed of it. I’m relieved.

Ava’s face softens to pity. Or maybe, it’s not a pity. Maybe, she feels everything that I feel. Maybe, in some fucked up, incomprehensible for me way, our souls are connected so she feels everything I do.

“You know why I don’t do relationships?”

She shakes her head no.

“Because she cheated on me, betrayed me, and then she left as if nothing ever happened,” I scream out, letting all of my emotions go, and it feels just as damaging as it is cleansing. “I built those walls around me to protect myself from being hurt again. Because maybe I’m not as emotionally tough as I pretend to be. But then… you showed up and destroyed the walls guarding me, brick by brick.”

“Damien…,” she whispers, looking at me as if she wants to take my pain away.

We stare at each other for a few seconds, and it feels like no more words are needed. We reconnect. Our souls reconnect. It seems like she wants to rush toward me, but before she can do so, Oliver quickly takes a hold of her arm, stopping her.

“Don’t let him fool you again, Ava.” He spits through his teeth, looking down at her. “It’s just another one of his games to get inside your pants.”

That fucking asshole!

I run toward my so-called best friend and give him the hard punch he deserves. Some people gasp, moving away, but no one interferes.

“Damien, stop!” Ava screams out in fear, “You’re going to hurt him!”

But I’m in a trance, and her words are just white noise. I punch my cousin one more time and then one more time. Not minding the punches I get in return. Blood is all I can see.
