Avalyne

Iwatch them fight like enraged animals, and I’m frightened. Damien throws his cousin a nasty punch that damages his nose because blood spills all over his face, his white shirt, and the ground. But it doesn’t seem to make them stop. Instead, they become even more furious. Oliver comes back at Damien, hard and hateful, cutting Damien’s bottom lip right there where he wears his piercing. If I don’t separate them, they will kill each other. I step between the fighting men and pull Damien away.

“Damien, please.” I look deeply into his rage-filled eyes, but my voice soothes his anger. “Please stop. Stop before you do something you’ll later regret.” I whisper to him, holding him tight in my embrace, trying to tame the beast inside of him.

“This is what you want, Ava?” Oliver screams, pointing at Damien. “A savage like him?!”

I turn to face him, “You’re no better than he is, Oliver!”

“You made them that way.”Not her.I look to the side and see Mallory watching the whole commotion from afar. She leans against the wall with her arms crossed, head tilted to the side, and a sarcastic grin.

“You can get the hell out of here!” I snap. Her provocative smirk makes me so angry that I can feel the rage flowing through my veins. I’m furious. Fuming. I swear I want to throw her a punch, but before I can even move, Damien steps in front of me, preventing the disaster that was about to come. Soothing my nerves, just like I did to him just a minute ago.

“This is exactly what she wants.” He whispers, gazing into my eyes. “Let’s get out of here.”

Damien puts a strand of my hair behind my ear. His touch along with his intoxicating scent that fills my lungs while I inhale, feel like a calming drug.

“Okay, let’s get out of here.” I nod, and Damien grabs my hand and closes it with his, leading me out of the club. Both Oliver and Mallory give us cold glances of failure.

“Are you okay?” Damien shouts back to me, concerned while shifting the gears of the bike as we pull onto the highway.

“Yes,” I sigh. How did I let Oliver and Mallory manipulate me?And there I was thinking Oliver was the ‘good guy’. I let out a heavy breath, and Damien fleetingly peeks at me before focusing his gaze on the road again. He reaches for my hand and cups it with his.

“Don’t beat yourself up over it, Ava.” He says as if reading my mind.

“How do you know what I’m thinking about?”

“I know you, Firefly.” He states, and his lips form into a soft curl. “Let’s get you home. I’m sure you need some time to process this shit show of a night.”

“I guess I do. Thank you.”

Damien

I drove Ava back to her place, and I’m on my way to see my mother. I have a haunting hunch that it wasn’t just Oliver’s idea to bring Mallory back. I have a hunch, Oliver plots with Black Widow behind my back. And if I’m right, all hell is about to break loose.

About an hour later, I pull into Black Widow’s driveway.Something’s off. I park next to a black Denali, which looks exactly like the truck Mallory used to drive in the past, except brand new.

Fuck! I knew my mother was behind all of this.

I don’t get out of the car. Instead, I drive away before her guards notice me. I park behind the mansion, in a place where I know her guards won’t see, and go on foot from there. I sneak inside and head toward her office.

“Mr. Alarie? What are you doing here?” One of the guards watching the door to my mother’s office asks, surprised to see me. Usually, my mother has all of the visitors scheduled, and her guards know all about it.

“My mother called me in. It’s something urgent.” I say coldly.

“She’s occupied, sir. And gave us a strict order not to disturb her.”

“I know,” I say casually, trying to seem as convincing as possible. “I’m supposed to participate in the meeting.”

“We don’t know anything about it, sir.” The man says hesitantly.

“I told you she called me, saying it’s urgent. She probably didn’t have the time to notify you.” I try to keep my cool, and they exchange confused looks. “You may leave.”

“Sir, we can’t. You know the rules.” The other guard interferes.

“Are you questioning my orders?” I ask calmly but firmly. “Did you forget I’m the heir to Black Venom? I don’t think I’ll have to ask my mother to remind you all of who’s in charge here. She won’t be happy about it.”

“Sir–”
