Avalyne

Iam running as fast as I can to Damien’s house, forgetting my phone at home. Thunder roaring closer, lightning flashing continuously, and raindrops pelting me in the face, making it hard to see. My emotions are spiraling out of control. Have you ever felt like you are sharing a brain with someone? Having the same thoughts? It’s like I can hear him in my head. Like we are carrying the same pain, running towards the same thing.

Adrenaline pumping through my veins…

…I can’t think about driving right now…

…I need to run…

…run away from the demons…

…that are constantly flooding my brain…

…adrenaline pumping so hard that…

…if I don’t run, I will implode…

…Firefly…

…Damien…

The one person who has demons as dark as mine but neglects to judge me. The person who wants me for me. The rain is slamming the streets, and dodging puddles is the last thing on my mind.

“Is that?” I come to a halt, allowing the drops to completely drench what is left of any dry space on my clothes as a figure starts forming through the torrential rain.

“Firefly?” Damien’s breathing heavily. He looks at me as confused as I am at him.

We stare at each other for an eternity, completely soaked up, but it doesn’t matter. Nothing matters anymore.

He closes the space between us, crashing his lips into mine. Something I need to feel like I’m not suffocating anymore. I take my nails and run them through his soaked, disheveled black hair. I let him slide his tongue over mine, taking me again and again. A growl escapes him, commanding all of my attention.

The air around us is buzzing, like something between us is about to ignite.

He pulls me into him, fleshing our bodies together, causing me to arch into him. I want more. I want all of this man. I want him to have all of me.

“Damien,” I reluctantly pull away. “What are you doing here?”

“You first.”

“My father disowned me. All because of what happened today,” my voice cracks as I try to blink through the drops of rain soaking through my eyelashes.

“I’ll go talk to him,” Damien starts past me, but I stop him.

“Don’t.”

I look at him as he, too, is about to break. He looks utterly defeated as his head is hanging as if he has completely given up. Lightning is flashing, thunder is clapping all around us, but it seems as though when we reach the end of the rope, we just don’t care anymore. All you can do is choose to hold on.

“My mom…, his dad,” he speaks, having trouble finding his words. Not something Damien Alarie ever has trouble with. “Oliver is my half-brother.”

What?“What?”

Damien looks away, clenching his fists. I try to come up with something better to say but fall short.

“Right? It’s so fucked up. I… she knew about it, and she was lying to me my entire life, Ava!” He screams as if letting all the emotions he’s been preserving for years out.

“Your mother?” I ask, again falling short of anything more than simple questions.

“If you can even call her that!” He lets out a breath.
