“Where’s Shane?” I cleared my throat, trying to hide my fear.

“One of my men took him home,” he replied, unfazed. “Don’t worry about my son, dear. He’s being taken care of.”

I wondered if such situations were the bread and butter for them. I started questioning the gossip about them being a Mafia family. The way they behaved, the gorillas all dressed in the same way, guarding Karl as if he was the most precious person in the world, following his orders without blinking, seemed to be taken out of a Mafia movie.

Nonetheless, Karl’s assurance that Shane was alright made me a little calmer. “Alright, Mr. Vergoossen. What do you want from me?”

“Your father called me this morning,” he stated, and my heart stopped.

“What?” I swallowed. Knowing my father’s hatred toward Karl Vergoossen, I’d never suspect he would contact him—his long-term worst enemy. I never knew what happened between them that they hated each other so much. I never really wanted to know. My father, being an ambitious politician, had many enemies.

“Hmm,” he muttered, amused. “Imagine my surprise when I heard your father wants to talk to me. First time in twenty years.”

“I don’t think I follow, Mr. Vergoossen. What do I have to do with all of this?” I started getting annoyed by all the games. Besides, I’d figured that if he wanted me dead or to harm me, he would’ve done that already. He wouldn’t waste his time if he didn’t have any interest in it. “I assume you didn’t shoot your son with a tranquilizer gun for no reason, right? My question is, what is the reason?”

He raised his brow, giving a single nod. “So you do have a feisty side. You should know I respect fearless and decisive people.” He smiled before pointing to a glass filled with whiskey that stood on my side of the armrest. “Fancy a drink, Miss Atwood?”

“No, thank you,” I replied dryly.

“Alright. Let’s skip our chitchat and get to the point of our charming conversation. Excuse me a moment,” he said before he turned to his men in the front seats, and they talked for a short while in a foreign language that I believed was Dutch before they clicked a button, and a dark window rolled up, dividing the space between his men and us.

I inhaled and exhaled deeply, feeling uncomfortable as hell. I was praying for this ridiculous encounter to end.

“We’re enemies, Miss Atwood,” Karl stated, turning his attention back to me. “I can’t let my son get involved with the daughter of my great enemy.”

I was confused. Perplexed. Dumbfounded. Shane and I… weren’t involved. Yes, we had sex twice, but that didn’t mean he’d want a relationship with me. I wasn’t even sure if I would want that. At the same time, the thought of not being allowed to see him again was like a stab in my heart. That thought… pained me. I was unable to explain it, but something was pulling me toward this man like a moth to a flame. I guess that was why Karl’s following statement made my heart skip a beat.

“Unless…” He paused, overseeing me.

So there’s an unless?“Unless what?” I asked, dying to hear what he had in mind. Adrenaline rushed through my veins more intensely than when he’d forced me to go with him in an unknown direction with no further explanations.

“We make a deal.”
